As regards gabapentin (aka Neurontin), you can google "morontin" to see reports of one of its unfortunate side effects.

Loulou, yet again I end up rather annoyed about what is offered to people with progressive MS. I must admit that I knew nothing of these two drugs but since David mentioned that gabapentin was prescribed for neuropathic pain and detrol for urinary problems, I thought they might be worth looking into for various people. However, to find out quickly that both medicines were likely to not just slow your reaction times but make you totally useless, gabapentin especially, made me very annoyed. What Paul says about it might well be correct, I don't know, but if you do as Norman suggests and google Morontin, you won't want to touch the stuff and it is an insult to you to be offered it. This is one of the milder comments I found: http://prhii.squarespace.com/psych-drug-news-and-studies/2010/11/8/morontin.html...................SarahA Journey through Light and Shadow

Loulou, what to do? Well, the first thing to do is what Norman suggests, which will put you off trying gabapentin but keep you in a much better frame of mind. Personally I would endeavour to put up with neuropathic pain but keep my sanity. Here is another link: www.dr-bob.org/babble/20050428/msgs/492394.htm Of course if your pain is all encompassing and won't allow you to sleep at night you might well be willing to put up with more depression and with people thinking that you have gone mad, but how bad is your pain?I suppose try detrol if your urinary problems are really bad because the side effects are not quite so bad as with gabapentin, but personally I wouldn’t take either...................SarahA Journey through Light and Shadow

Loulou, I have 2 friends taking neurontin, one of whom could not live without it (her trigeminal neuralgia is known as "the suicide disease). It has allowed her to live a normal life and she has experienced no side effects. My other friend says it makes her sleepy.
PPMS-misdiagnosed 2001-diagnosed 2006. Probably caught cpn in birth canal but it didn't pass BBB until my 40s. Minocycline 7 mos.- resulting bronchitis 5 months.Go to private m.d. out-of-plan. Wheldon CAP 3/2/07 Stopped 12/12; resumed 12/13
Loulou,Do you by any chance
Loulou,Do you by any chance have MS? Dr. S. and I were just discussing antibiotics and gabapentin and we both think it has some interesting potential. Gabapentin imight be interesting because it is quite acidic and actively transported across the BBB. It reaches higher concentrations in the CNS than in the rest of the body and has potential to be a very positive adjuvant. Howver this is just a hypothesis and to my knowledge has not been tested. But I will be very interested to see how it goes for you...- Paul
