Why do I feel so low when increasing NAC?

This is the second time I get depressed (that is a strong word) or very low a few days after increasing NACi. The first two-four days I get symtoms like joint-pain, sore throat,  but then I get really tired and almost depressed.  That is today. Last time it happened I didn't take any NAC at all the next day and the low-feeling disappeared. But I don't know if it was the right thing to do. Also my body have been much more swollen than usuall.

Do you think this a die-off reaction ? Can toxins from dead EBs  do this? Depressed feeling and fluid accumulation? I have much more difficulties to tolerate a low mood than pain. And that constantly swollen feeling is very irritating.

I am sure the answer already is here somewhere here on cpnhelp but I don't have the energy to search for it.

Odhilda

Yes Odhilda, the toxins are doing this and the best way to deal with toxins is to drink lots.....water, green tea, anything you like but not artificially sweetened stuff  and move about as much as you can.  It seems counter-intuitive to drink lots when you feel swollen but it works to get the stagnant fluid moving and out.  Then once the toxins are out they won't be affecting your brain  so the low feeling improves too.    Maybe you could try backing down to the dose of NACi that you were tolerating before instead of stopping altogether, then when you feel better try for the bigger dose again.

Hey Odhilda,

The NACi does create die off reaction & it made me really tired.  I had to have a "NAC Nap" in the beginning until I got used to it.  If the reaction is too much to handle at the moment, you may want to decrease your intake for the time being.

Grace & Peace

It is not uncommonn for people to find it difficult to increase the dose of NACi, it can lead to a variety of different symptoms.   I found it particularly difficult on my stomach and gut, but then these are the site of some of my major symptoms.

Hi,

I had a similar reaction when I increased NACi from once to twice a day.

I read that Dr. Cheney cautions people about using NAC as it can induce depression.

I am going to limit NAC to 600mg once a day -- as long as even that doesn't bring on depressive feelings.

I know the difference between depressed feelings and feeling just down or some kind of reaction to toxins.  Perhaps googling NAC might bring up more info or google Paul Cheney, MD who is a well known cfsi specialist might be informative.  Hope this helps.

Thank you Denise, that is very interesting to hear! As you suggest,  I think I  will  make a google on NACi and Paul Cheney further on.

Hi Michele,

Have you heard of people having reactions of depression to NACi?? It occured with me -- I want to take NAC so will re-try it at 600mg and see what happens.  I know it's not just the "blues" when it occurs.  Perhaps I should try even slower intro -- say 600mg every other day?   Yep, it's always something!

When I began the NACi the worst reaction I had at the time was I required a NAC nap daily for a few weeks.

People have reported feeling depressed, but it is sometimes difficult if you are taking NACi at the same time as the ABXi to decide which substance is the culprit.   For instance my stomach gets the worse of it when I take NAC and flagyli, more NAC more stomach problems, but equally more Flagyl more stomach problems.  I have not dared increased both at the same time.

I have a harder time with the naci than with taking flagyli. I have been on the protocol for almost 2 years and am still only on 600mg Nac per day. I will increase to 700mg in the fall. I feel suicidal when I increase it. kc

It is a never-ending surprise to see how incredibly different we are! My nemesis is flagyli - I have never been able to tolerate more than 375mg 3xd for 5d, but I was able to get to 2400mg NACi in a few months. Good to see you here. We've missed you!
