What to take for depression associated with CFS?

Submitted by Lynn on Mon, 2008-02-11 14:13

I need any information anybody can give me on overcoming depression associated with CFS. I am currently taking 40 mg/ day Nortriptyline, 300 mg/day Wellbutrin, 75 mg/day DHEA. I'm on a lot of anti-oxidants too.

Still experiencing moderate to severe depression. Most days, severe depression. What will help? Anything? Does Vitmain D help? I have to hold down my full time job and the depression (along with the fatigue) is REALLY taxing me and my motivation and could cost me my job if I can't find something to help.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Lynn

Are you on any progesterone? that is a good bit of dhea that you are taking. dhea converts into estrogens. if you are not taking any progesterone, you maybe making yourself estrogen dominant. estrogen dominant caused me increased fatigue, depression and decreased motivation.

For me, Vit D gives me severe depression. I take about 1000mg a day. This 1000mg comes from calcium, and vit supplements. I have tried taking more, and within 2-3 days, I'm severely depressed. I've tried upping my vit d on three different occasions and cant..Of course each person is different..

Sharon, have you tried taking Vit D whilst not taking calcium? I ask because calcium makes me severely depressed.  Also we have similar health profiles and no doubt both of us have disregulated calcium metabolism. I wonder if the Vit D is making you depressed purely by increasing calcium absorption?

I take, for depression, specifically, Inositol capsules.

Last year, at this time, on the urging of my MD who advised pharmaceutical antidepressants can cause permanent to the neuro transmitters in our brain; I weaned myself off them.  It was a difficult job that hit home to me these drugs are highly addictive.

I settled on non addictive Inositol after trying SAMe & Lithium (found at most health food companies).  They all worked for me as well as the other, but I found the Inositol to be more cost effective.

I take all the supplements recommended here for the protocol except horny goat weed as it is more suited for men & testosterone.  Too much testosterone causes me to grow a mustache!  I don't need to fight with my husband about using his razor, lol.

I also take progesterone cream (from yams), pregnenalone & 7 keto DHEA I buy from the health food company on line.  I do not take perscription hormone replacement as breast cancer worries me.

This is just what I do.

Rhodiola rosea for depression works great. I know from first-hand experience that it works for better than prescription antidepressants. It also gives you energy and improves mental clarity unlike prescription antidepressants that just make you feel sedated.

Pro-Gest cream helps with the monthly moodiness if that's an issue for you.

I noticed that a mild depression that had been with me since my early teens lifted after about 3 months of taking both fish oils (about 18 grams a day) and vitamin d (D3 6000 IU per day with calcium and magnesium).

Some simple google searches confirmed my 'findings'!

Lynn- the fish oils are, pardon the pun, a no-brainer. Do them no matter what. In the prescription antidepressant area I've seen the dual-reuptake inhibitors like Cymbalta and Effexor to be better than the single ones like prozac or celexa, and better than the old-style antidepressants like nortryptiline. Some people do better on Wellbutrin, as it has more energizing effect for CFS'ers, and is commonly combined safely with other antidepressants such as nortryptiline for a boosting effect. If you are benefiting from the nortryptiline in other ways (eg sleep, etc) you might try getting your doc to add the Wellbutrin and see if that takes up the slack.

Sharon, I take 300mg daily of New Chapter Force 300. My husband, however, seems to be quite happy with just 150mg of rhodiola from Ameriden's Rosavin. Typical dosages are 100mg-400mg, starting with the lowest and working up until you feel results. Taking more than you need is not dangerous but taking too much tends to be more sedating rather than energizing so it's important to find your "just right" dose.

Have you found a cost effective online store for Inositol and Rhodiola? How much Inositol are you taking daily?

Thanks!

Hi Lynn,

I buy the Inositol from American Nutrition & use the NOW Foods make.  I take 2 - 4 capsules a day.  Usually I take 2 AM & 1 PM unless I can feel some "depression" signs rearing.  I know I have to take a bit more when I start feeling insecure & nay saying!

Hi Lynn,

I take my evening Inositol after dinner with my other supplements.   I can't tell you if it keeps me up specifically; with the supplements they can keep you up when your body wants to rest & heal at night.

I am still taking 7 Keto DHEA; why did you stop taking it?

I stopped for cost effectiveness and I'm going to have doc test my adrenals and thyroid next week and see what he wants me to do. Within 2 days of stopping it i could tell a difference in the depression, it lifted a little. And i could not afford yet one more supp by going and getting the progesterone!

Slight improvement, stopped DHEA altogether. Yesterday I added D-Ribose, charcoal caps, gatorade and Inositol. The first time i could feel a difference within an hour. Today i can tell a slight improvement, not as obvious as yesterday.

Conflictual information: it says to drink sports drinks but not intake sucrose or fructose and this is what they are sweetened with. What to do??

Lynn- Glucose/dextrose is the ideal, but sucrose/fructose will get pretty readily converted. A discussion a while back said that "corn syrup" has more glucose while "high fructose corn syrup" does not. There's a product called "gookinade" which is a powder you mix. But if the regular sports drinks do okay for you, use them as they are cheaper.

Lynn, i'm not sure if you still have periods or not..I do. for me, I noticed the increase in depression, fatigue and decreased motivation the second half of my cycle. i think the reason being is that from day 5-12 (give or take a day), we are naturally estrogen dominant. Then days 17 to 25 (give or take) we are naturally progesterone dominant. The dhea converts into our estrogens. so, days 5-12, i was better but I was naturally suppose to be estrogen dominant. but i felt lousy the rest of the month b/c I had to much estrogen in a progesterone dominant part of my cycle. so, if you still have cycles, you might want to make a chart and start noticing if you see a trend. I sure did. it took me about 3 months before I realized what was going on.

also, it maybe that your hormones are out of whack and you may need estrogens as well as progesterones. I did.

Hi Lynn,

I have been taking Zoloft for about 14 years and it has helped me tremendously.  I don't feel sedated at all on Zoloft.

Of course we all need to have the right diets, supplements, etc., but I found that this was not sufficient for me.

While Zoloft has been very good for me, it can't eliminate the natural downs of having this miserable condition and all the other fun things that spring from it, but it helps a lot in making me much more resilient overall.

Good luck!
