Water kefir 'dose' :-)
Tks Jen for the tips on water kefir for controlling candida. I've been playing around with my sugar kefir grains and have finally mastered a ginger brew. Very excited at the thoughobey being able to drink something sweet and non green-vege juice like :-D
My question for Jen or anyone else who has been crazy enough to cultivate drinkable bacteria (is there anyone else?), how much can you drink per day? I know a lot of the sugar is consumed by the grains, but a small amount remains. Still, can you drink as much as you like because of the probiotic effect? And is it best in between meals?
Thanks :-)

Ok so I didn't preview. "thoughobey" in the first paragraph equals "thought of being".
Clearly.

Chuckle. I mistype frequently and misspell some and have been poked fun at for doing so. I would choose a correction if a user feel inclined to bring it up. And did you check to see if you can still edit your post? Some things can be changed after to fact and some not. Just an aside, when I post something that I think I might need to edit, like want to find a link for someone in a suggestion, I pose my question, then continue my comment as a response so that I can add the link and have access to my edit function. Sometimes I correct sometimes I let the typo stand as the jist of the sentence can be understood by english speakers most likely. I do not know what is does for english as a second language but......
I am wondering about your "water Kefir". We have dairy kefir available on the grocery shelves in some places locally. Kate001 I know that you are from across the pond in one direction or another ;0).
The dairy kefir here has multiple probiotic organisms, a broader range than yogurt in general, plain tastes similar. Lucky for me I like the taste of plain which reduces the sugar but it still contains lactose which may be a challeng for some folks.
Anyone in the US that has knowledge about sources of "water" kefir starter. Or better yet something comercial that can be purchased and tried before actually trying to "grow it" yourself?
Louise
Hi Kate,
I'm so glad cultivating this crazy stuff is working out :o)
I drink several cups of water kefir a day. My daily fluids are water, tea, and water kefir. For me, the water kefir is crucial for keeping the candida in check. I fill up a sports bottle with it and take it to work, sipping from it through out the day. I haven't noticed any difference concerning when I drink it.
Actually, the good bacteria consume 40% of the sugar, leaving 60%. It's not great, but at least that 60% sugar will not promote yeast growth because of the good bacteria in the water kefir. If sugar is an issue to anyone, then please watch your consumption.
Before I started water kefir, I couldn't drink any fruit juice. Now I can have fun adding apple, orange, mango...etc juice to the brew and end up with a very satisfying fruity drink....that actually kills candida. BTW: Apple/ginger water kefir is awesome.
Those idiots in the world that say medicine has to taste bad to work....need to have their heads examined.

Hi Louise,
The problem with commerical milk kefir (which is created from a starter) is that it's a poor subsitute for the real thing. Not even a fraction as potent, because they do not contain all the strains of microbes found in the real stuff. If you're looking for something to significantly help you healthwise.....a starter is not only a bad idea...it's pointless. And the lactose in the real stuff is at very low levels. My husband, having lactose-intolerance, never had a problem with it.
As for water kefir, there are no starters and nothing produced commercially. You have to obtain real grains to make it. If you join the Kefir-Making Yahoo Group there are people there who not only have grains to spare but will mail you some. Many ask you only to cover the cost of shipping.
I took a chance, got the grains and am so happy I did. They are fairly cheap to make and just require some patience.

Oooh I used to culture kefir with coconut milk (tricky!) or UHT but never tried this type. Anyone in the UK got any spare grains they're willing to donate? Will defo join the group tomorrow :)

Jen or anyone, do you have a list of the species that folks are proliforating for their personal use in this "Water Kefir" combination of probiotic intestinal flora support?
I wonder what DW might share about this subject as his area has been the microscopic world of the human body as I see it (please correct me if I am off target here)?
I know he responded to a comment about Kefir that I made several years ago in a thread.
Louise
I can only help with those after grains in Australia...not much help to most of you!
Interrupted...coconut milk....yuuuum!

For interrupted,
The Kefir-Making Yahoo Group has members in the UK. Join up and ask if anyone has extra grains. You should get offers.

Hi Jen,
I did but wasn't sure if I could ask as the title page says only the leader guy should be consulted about procuring grains, lol. Will do though, thank you :) xx

People make open requests all the time. Never saw anything about asking "leader guy".

Thank you Jen, I will look at this next week link. Lots of plans over the next few day, such a wonderful thing to be busy and CAPi has given me back an interesting functional life! Louise
I saw once I got to grips with it, it was this that I was unsure of,
"Only the list owner can offer cultures and or other products including literature for sale over this list. He requests that list members do not post their selling sites, products or advertise in any shape or form on this list. Inquiries regarding this matter are welcomed, and should be forwarded to the list owner. This wish is to help ensure that the list does not lose focus and become burdened with advertisement. It is not a commercial list as such."
BUT no problem, put up a message and a very kind person is sending me some :) xx

But people arn't really 'selling' the grains. They at most asking to be reimbused for shipping. That might be the loophole.
Glad you're getting some :o)
