Smarties Candy Rolls - USA VALUE!

Today I set out to find Smarties.

Should you search this topic here there are other threads.

I was looking to have improved Porphoric Regimen supplies on hand as suggest so often in the posts.

I went to the local independent drugstore.   Glucose tablet packaged for Diabetics in a small plastic tube, yes very handy and protable.   10 tablets/ each tablet 15 calories/4gms Glucose price 1.99 US.  that is 0.20 cents each.

At Walmart same number of tablets in this standard formulation 1.28/10 tablets/Not much improvement .12cents each better but still..  In in bulk packing 50 tablet/4.78 US that is .09 cents each.

Now for the cost comparison of the Made in USA CE DE CANDY , Inc., Union NJ 07083

www.smarties.com

smartie costing analysis: each "penny" roll Dextrose based packet( superior as it is used as an IV source of energy)  is 25 calories/6gm Glocose   price 1.86 for 60 rolls each roll approx two of the glucose tablets. 120 doses divided by 1.86 equals 0.0155 cents per dose.

Many thanks Jim K for your pertenent post!

Now do you want to hear about my third paying job during high school.  There is a relationship here!

"...third paying job during high school" related to Smarties candies?  To say the least, you've got me curious.

Sorry but I can't just let this go by......I know you all like your Smarties so you won't like me saying this but  they're JUNK,   if you need glucose then you'd be much better off buying pure glucose (dextrose) powder without all the nasty additives and  if you're concerned about value for money then it would definitely be your best buy.

This is what is in Smarties....   http://www.smarties.com/nutritionalinfo.html

.....described as nutrition but not 'nutritional' in the sense that we normally think of being good for your body.  The big worry is the artificial colouring that is made with aluminium lake

http://www.neelikon.com/lakes.htm

Aluminium is all around us in many foods and drinks and most people can deal with taking in a certain amount but if you are already ill and struggling with toxin excretion then it's not something that will do you any good especially if you are low in magnesium, as many of us with ME/CFSi/FMSi/Lyme are, it can accumulate in nervous tissue, if you're feeling brave look it up on Pubmed.

Wholistic healers and homeopaths have known about the dangers of too much aluminium for many years, the scientists are waking up at last and advising people at risk to avoid it but you need to make up your own minds about whether to put large amounts of this stuff into your already compromised system, in my opinion people trying to recover from ME/CFS need to  really clean up their diet, Smarties are not health food.........sorry

Smarties in Britain are quite different; they are glazed chocolate buttons. We buy glucose from a home-brew shop; it's £1:50 a kilo (about 3 US$). D W - [Myalgia and hypertensioni (typically 155/95.) Louise, thanks for posting the link on "Smarties" ... (I'd not taken the time to look them up) and now I know what they look like.  I see they also make those candy necklaces -- I used to love those as a child!

David, what do you do with this glucose? Mix it with water, bake with it? How best to use it? I have been having some serious sweet craving!

Thanks

Malcolm, I mix a teaspoon of glucose into a glass of orange juice. It doesn't add appreciably to the sweetness and doesn't change the flavour much. Sarah used to benefit from glucose stirred into water when she was at the beginning of her treatment. D W - [Myalgia and hypertensioni (typically 155/95.) Remember, with Halloween fast approaching, some stores are now stocking the 3.5 pound bag which gives you 210 rolls for an even lower unit price.  Stock up now before the ghosts and goblins get 'em.

I wouldn't touch Smarties with a barge-pole, they are stuffed full of aluminium-based colourings and  anyone serious about recovering their health would definitely be much better off with pure glucose powder without nasty additives.  I posted to this thread yesterday and put in some links about aluminium being an undesirable 'food' in ME, CFSi, MS etc but the message was held up as potential spam so until Jim gets around to letting it through you could just research for yourself if you're interested.

Elinor, Too many links in one post will hold it up for perusal as spam. Might be better to make two separate posts in order to get the info through.

Well, in the U.S. at least, there's always Werther's or even Kraft Caramel toffees. Almost straight glucose, and no aluminum that I see.

They're a little more convenient in the pocket or purse than homebrewer's syrup or Karo! Watch out for Karo, though; they've started making some flavors with HFCS.

I'll bet the white ones don't have any coloring in them. If you only ate the white ones and threw away the rest, it would probably still be cheaper than the glucose tablets from the drugstore.

In my case, the problem is solved because one of my cats just ate some of the aluminum dyed Smarties out of the roll while I was typing this.

P.S. To all the fellow cat lovers; don't flame me over that last paragraph.  Those were the first (and last) Smarties that Domino (a/k/a Sister Dominicus) will ever get (unless she is is especially sneaky).

Can't speak for David, but they say simple pleasures are the best, so I suggest just licking your index finger and sticking it in the bag.
