Does anybody have experience with having a colonoscopy? I would like to do so, as I am 55 now, and the Dr. once found some blood in my stool. Just routine, but I am scared of the 24-hour fast before the procedure. also, being chemically sensitive, anesthesia makes me really sick.
I'm curious if anybody on this protocol who has secondary porphyriai [1] has been able to have a colonoscopy? I just get really ill when I miss a meal, and can't imagine fasting for 24 hours. And then having anesthesia on top of it! Does anybody know any way around this?
I looked online and saw a "virtual" type of colonoscopy which doesn't require anesthesia, but it also asks for a 24-hour fast.
Thanks,
Joy

Hi Joy,Haven't done it, but
Hi Joy,
Haven't done it, but it certainly might be a little tough on the secondary porphyriai [1]. Looks like you can have "clear" liquids like gatorade and even, evidently non-red or purple jello (I'd go with the sugar based kind) which probably would help counter the secondary porphyria symptoms though:

Obviously check with your doctor about these...
Good luck!

Treatment for Rosaceai [7]

I've had several colonoscopies over the years including one since I was on the CAPi [8].
It was not a problem. You have to make sure that the people doing the anesthesia know about all the medications you're taking since the CAP medications can change the rate at which your liver processes the anesthesia.
As Red said, you can have clear liquids (so long as they are not the color red) and that mitigates the effects of the fast in my case. My gastroenterologist really pushes taking the laxative with apple juice believing that it does a better job in keeping blood sugar up without letting it go too high.
When I had to do the "preparation", I sent my wife and kids to the movies and spent the evening in the bathroom. It was not pleasant, but it certainly wasn't a problem.

Hello Joy,I see you've been
Hello Joy,
I see you've been a member here for a couple of months.. How long have you been on the ABXi [13]?
I just had a colonoscopy in March of this year (not by choice, but I'm glad I did!). The prep wasn't that bad... my nurse suggested I ask for an "anti-cramping" drug (sorry can't remember the name of it) It obviously helped as I had no cramps.. My prep drink was cherry flavored, wasn't bad, but you still have to get used to the taste!
As for fasting -- they do give you jello and clear liquids so it wasn't that bad. Perhaps you can suck on Smarties or glucose if you need to?
I have problems with anesthesia as well, not sickness, but rather my blood pressure takes a long time to get back up to where they would like it -- longer for me to "come to". I was given an iv and by the count of 3 I was out.
I encourage you not to be afraid.... part of what was discovered in my colonoscopy was that I had an "area that appeared to be infected" The doc didn't say if it was a current infection or scarring from a past.
I have IBSi [14] and gastrointestional problems as well... so I am assuming this area was from the CPNi [15]. I am also happy to know that the ABXi [16] will clear this out of me.
Perhaps you may feel more comfortable if you can wait till you are further into the protocol and have the porphyriai [17] more in control?

Hi Joy,
Although I was not on CAPi [8] while having the last few colonoscopies I've had, I do have hypoglycemia and can't go without food for more than a few hrs. I also now believe some of these hg sxs are secondary porphyriai [1].
When I arrived at the out patient site for my last colonoscopy I thought they were going to turn me away because my bp was so low, prob from the Benicar that I was still taking but they still put me to sleep. The anesthesia that's used for the procedure is very mild and not hard for us that have health issues to wake from. You're only out for a few minutes.
Be sure to eat LOTS of jello (no red coloring) for a little protein along with the sugar (don't get sugar free; you'll need the carbs) and some chicken broth for the salt too. Too little salt makes one weak when on a fasting type diet.
And do drink lots of Gatorade and anything to keep the sugar up in your body. I know it's so not healthy as far as diets go, but it's so doable as long as you keep a steady stream of carb drinks handy and the jello and broth.
