Possible New Forum Look

One of the complaints about the Forum is that it is confusing for new folks as it doesn't resemble the more common forum boards out there. I've installed a tweak that makes the forum look like regular forums. Unfortunately, it's only visible in the theme we use if you go to the Forums tab and doesn't extend to the comments themselves. Also, the lettering is overly large in this particular theme. But take a look and let me know if that way of presenting the forum would be a better intro for new people, or easier to use in other ways.

OK Jim, I thought that I was less foggy today but perhaps not.   I found the page that you are referring to by clicking the link through next to your posting time and date, using the Cpnhelp.org site phrase.   I am not sure where a new user would be likely to see this would it come up when clicking on recent posts?  Hope some other comments are more helpful that this one is.

Thanks for all you do to voluntarily keep this site up and running.  I appreciate that it is not supported by promotions (comercials) for stuff.   Louise

Hi Jim~   As a newbie to

Hi Jim~   As a newbie to this forum, here are my thoughts...

I've found it difficult to post here for a number of reasons...First I have to figure out what the heck to click on just to post something.  So, I choose create content and forum topic, and hope something happens that looks like I can post.  I am confused about the difference between blog entry and forum topic...initially, until I do more reading on this site.  Filling in the subject is straight forward enough...and in my opinion should be all you should have to do.  The next step always confuses and entangles me...I don't want to choose a forum...and I certainly don't like scrolling down that next list that starts with Alopeciai...these seem unneccessary and cumbersome to me.   Lymenet is probably the easiest forum I've posted on.  www.lymenet.org  They have a few simple catagories (Medical Question, General Support, Seeking a Doctor, etc)...and then a "post new topic button")   They also have a great search engine, so if you want to know all about bicillin, for example, you can find every post that ever mentions bicillin.

The other format that you have  proposed seems to me to have a bit too many catagories.   I'd want to look in them all, which would take too much time to click and open each one.   So, I'd probably give up and never look in any of them.  With lymenet, I simply and easily scroll down the recent topics of the day, and if I see one of interest, I click on it and read it.

I appreciate this website as it has given me info on Cpni.  I still hesitate (should I say dread) to start a new topic, for it is quite difficult for me to do.

Replying is easy...as in this reply..it is pretty straight forward.  Starting a new post is not easy for me.

I do appreciate everyone's kindness on this board.

Those are my thoughts..hope they are helpful from a 'newbie'.   Keep it simple...is the best advice I can give.

Best,    Timaca

I may not be your average site user due to being more technical, but I like the new forum look.  Whatever works, but this one looks nice.

I think I prefer the old format, slightly messy and used, but other people, especially new ones might find this preferable. You don't want to look too much like the MPi site, thoughFoot in mouth...........Sarah

Completed Stratton/Wheldon regime for aggressive secondary progressive MSi in June 2007, after nearly four years, three of which intermittent.   Still slowly improving and no exacerbation since starting. EDSSi was 7, now 2, less on a good day.

 My one comment is that

My one comment is that the light blue lettering in the subtopic space is very light and a bit diffiult to read.  I perfer black or a darker blue lettering for ease of reading if this can be done.  Also the white subtopic heading in the first box may be pretty but again difficult to read.

Seeing a list of categories

Seeing a list of categories available is a good idea and makes it easier to choose the appropriate one, however I agree that the pale blue is not easy to read.

Colors and what not are

Colors and what not are changeable if we decide this is useful. It's the layout and whether it is a more familiar way to access forums that is the concern. I really appreciate your comments, Timaca, as you come at it fresh, brain-fogged, etc., and it's folks like you coming new to the site that we are most concerned about. I'm not sure if anything can be done about your difficulties figuring out how to forum post, except that if you are already in a particular category (say you go to http://www.cpnhelp.org/?q=forum and click on Treatment Experiences http://www.cpnhelp.org/?q=forum/2) you will see a button at the top "Post New Forum Topic." If you click it, the category is already set from the Treatment Experiences one you have been browsing. Does that make it easier?

To be honest, I'm not sure the scroll down list of categories (alopeciai, etc) is that helpful as I never got the hang of how to use this system to our advantage. We could probably do without it and save members the extra work or confusion.

Jim, can FORUM be added to the list on the left above recent posts?

It could encourage folks to go in that way.  I have to say that Sarah pointed me in the right direction at the top of the page dah!!!   I generally hit recent posts look at my posts and then all posts.

Guess we all have our "personalized ways of dealing with the access possibilities.   All roads lead to Rome or some such, just some are more user friendly!

Thanks for your efforts.   Louise

I did see something that I didn't see earlier with the new format.  I went into a discussion and saw that the text on the topic subject before selecting it is a much larger font size then it is in the general list of forums.  I think it's overkill and like the size of the fonts in the general list of forums.

Yeah, John, that's just the interation with this particular theme. It would look different in a different theme (like the light blue one that was a favorite for some).

Jim~   Thanks for your hard work regarding this website.  I usually tend to enter the discussions via "recent posts."   Yes, it is easier to post via the method you described in your post.

I do agree with you about considering deleting the "alopeciai, et all" list.

I do agree with the others that the font for the subject is a bit large if you enter via "forum".

I agree that the font size

I agree that the font size is rather large but no doubt that will be addressed in the final version. What is a really good feature of the new design is the ability to mark posts as read, a great time saver for the fogged or those of us who are just plain tired. Although I have finally become accustomed to the current layout I think that the more familiar forum layout will be much more easily used by newcomers.

So long as I can continue entering by the 'Recent posts' route which combines all sources eg. blogs, forum posts etc., I'll be content. Cool

Hmm... the color is easier

Hmm... the color is easier on the eyes, yet the format is SO different from what we've had. If I HAD to vote right now, I'd vote for keeping what we have now, but eliminating all those topics on the drop-down menu. I'm going to give it the old college try and go back there and try to navigate it a bit.

I also vote for keeping it the way it is. It is different from the rest - and so are we.

I would also vote to keep

I would also vote to keep it the way it is.  It's taken me awhile to get used to this forum just like it did other forums.  I think anyone new here will get used to the forum whichever way it is.

I also do like speedbird and usually look at the recent posts section first.  If there's something else I want to follow, then I look that up by the person blogging it or something else.
