Porphyria and sulphur

On this page from this site, it talks about avoiding foods with sulphur in, since they might precipitate Porphyria.

But since NAC contains sulphur....could it be that it will make the Porphyria worse, and maybe it is worth using Amoxycillin instead?

That's not an authoritative source; and lumping all sulphur compounds together is almost always a mistake. NAC helps protect the liver, and that probably helps with porphyria.

Amoxicillin is one of my five daily abx, and I still take NAC.  Our bodies work very hard at this, and if NAC does all these amazing things, then we will both take it daily - and do!

If I have learned anything about this whole thing, it is that we need to do all we can to stay healthy - the second is that there are no shortcuts.

NAC protects the liver but amoxicillin can play havoc with your bowels and the people at Vanderbilt now use NAC in place of amoxicillin.  See the third paragraph here: http://www.cpnhelp.org/?q=strattonprotocolupdate ........................Sarah

Erica is allergic to many forms of sulfur: in wine, on dried fruit, to ripen fresh fruits, in medications. I wonder if that is why she has such an AWFUL time with NAC??  And, so far (3 mos. into treatment) her liver enzymes are fine.

What are her symptoms of allergic response?  So many of us have had "allergies" all our lives.  At some point they lessen or go away.

Rica, she has true allergies to the sulfites in wine and some fresh fruits. Her reaction to NAC is sheer misery; quadrupled MS pain and symptoms. She already feel awful. /When she takes NAC she feels so much more awful, she would rather be dead. Living is not worth it. She plans her suicide. I realize that is not an allergic reaction; it's overwhelming die off: emphasis on "over   whelming" Which may also be affecting mind and emotions, beside legs and arms and hands, etc.Anyway, for her, NAC will have to go on "hold" temporarily.

She is totally looking forward to the day all the allergies disappear. with the Cpn.

Cheer her up with the news that several people have reported allergies to dogs, cats and wool have disappeared on this treatment.
