Off topic discussions

Would it work to make The Back Porch forum available to members only?   Not as a way of excluding people  but so that anyone coming casually to the site in search of  information on Cpn wouldn't be distracted by discussions about Shakespeare, football, the mysteries of the universe etc. This isn't the easiest site to work your way around (unless you go straight to Ron's excellent How to Work This Website) and fogged-up newcomers would then have the chance to see just how good it is as a medical resource before deciding if it's worth registering and staying around.  Then once a member ......

No, even if it could be done, I think it would give totally the wrong impression.  There are places such as the which have membership only sections which just seem secretive and strange, so if we seemed like that it might just frighten people away.  There are enough places higher up on the home page for people not to be distracted by the mysteries of the universe unless they want to be.......Sarah
