Hi Markus,
This is a manuscript for publication that has not yet been peer-reviewed. I did a quick read and it looks like Stratton was trying to establish "in vitro" conditions that would mimic the progression of the pathogen "in vivo". This would enable them to more quickly assess treatment agents and protocols that could then be applied to patients in a more predictable manner.
