Niacin, dry eyes, eyelashes broke off

Fifteen years ago I suddenly developed dry eyes, and then eight years ago my eyelashes broke off. For years I had no eyelashes, and I used to have long eyelashes. I had to use eye drops at least once an hours. CAP helped a little. I think I have mites. They are too small to be seen without magnification, and live in sebaceous pores and in a line of pores inside the eyelids. Sometimes I could feel something on my eyeball, without being able to see the irritant. They depend on bacteria, and when CAP reduced the bacteria, the number of mites dropped, too. When I first went on CAP, I had to change my bed sheets daily, or I would itch. I develped a line of tiny red bumps along my hairline. Niacin kills nanoinsects, and that may be why niacin causes flushing in the areas with the most sebaceous glands. I am killing the mites with pyrethione dandruff shampoo, tea tree oil, and borax. After a month, my eyelashes are growing back. I had been prepared to wait for months for any lash growth. I hope they grow back long. I hadn’t been taking niacin often, because the flush was so unpleasant, but now that I realize what it is doing, I take it daily. It is good to take niacin against white blood cells infected with cpn, so I should have been taking it anyway.

Yay, Janice, for "getting this"!  Your very own weird symptom and you found the answer - one more little piece of the puzzle, but one that will probably have a big impact on your quality of life.

Janice, Who would have guessed using niacin for these symptoms. We are all a work in progess, learning as we go. I sometimes use nicinimide, this seems to help with circulation.

started Wheldon cap 4/21/08 for Cpn, CMV, EBV, CFS. Cap hold 4/09vascultis. Restart 9/09 with Dr.Powell, restore gut, 4000 D3, supplements,  Pos. Bartonella and Babesia, Rifampin 600 mgs and Biaxon 1 gram.

I believe there is something in the Cpn handbook about niacin and Cpn..what follows is part of what Dr. S wrote:

Cpn exploits a variety of mechanisms to thwart our immunei system. There is one mechanism that is particularly important and can be countered by over the counter supplementsii. Cpn targets niacini metabolism. In doing so it leads to impaired T-cell function, low melatonini, low serotonin, low tryptophan, low niacin all of which can present as depression, fatigue and insomnia, all familiar symptoms in Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgiai and a host of Cpn related disorders.

Wow Janice, congratulation to such success. I also plan to add niacin to my abx mix again. I stopped it due to very displeasing flashing. How much do you take daily? I want to try up my dose to 2000mg daily and hope it can supplant isoniazid.

Stratton/Wheldon protocol 02/2006 - 10/11 for CFS and many problems 30 years

I take 3000 mg of niacin.

Since cpn impairs niacin metabolism, I wonder if this is related to the number of mites one has. Most adults have mites, but apparently most people aren't allergic to them.

I found a few websites of people treating rosacea by attacking their mites.

Janice, Do you know if niacinamide works the same way as niacin?

I have noticed that when I take the niacinamide that my mood it better.

I understand that nonflush niacin doesn't work as well against cpn as ordinary niacin, and it has to be the high dose. The flush makes me miserable. A couple of years ago I was on continuous metronidazole, and took a course of Ivermectin. The flush wasn't as bad then as it was when I started CAP or as it is now. I don't react now to NAC, and a year ago I wasn't reacting to antibiotics. I don't know why I am flushing to niacin now, and I hope it isn't from cpn in white blood cells.

Janice - the niacin flush should subside after a week or so of daily use with most people (and it's duration should only last 45-90 minutes)...but if you stop the niacin and then begin it again weeks or months later, the flush will happen again.  The cardiologist says it's probably a good idea to stop using it a few days before a liver function test, because using a high dose of niacin can raise liver enzymes somewhat, but he feels this is harmless.

My eyelashes are still growing.

Nice observations Janice. I think that the quote about niacin is from Dr. Powell--it sounds like exactly what he says about it. I usually take niacinamide for nerve repair but niacin is supposed to be the one that counteracts the effects of Cpn. I have a hard time taking it. Never got beyond 100 mgs. But I should revisit it. Thanks for posting this! Raven
