My Personal Breakthrough

Some of you know my story and experience already. I started too fast, probably took 3 weeks of Flagyli in the first 8 weeks of treatment, along with all of the supps and doxyi/azithro/NACi, and even amoxicillini for a while. My last 3 day pulse of Flagyl ended 13 days ago due to nausea. A week later I could still hardly think or get off of the couch. I was about to try a Vit C flush for the first time but since I had only taken a few charcoal capsules in the past I decided to try that first. I had never really thought I was having secondary porphyriai symptoms because they were the same as my pre-protocol symptoms. Well I took a handfull of 250 mg caps, about 16 with a lot of water, and within a day I was a new person. Fatigue better, brain fog better, tinnitusi better, burning feet almost gone, muscle twitches almost gone, tingling extremities gone, even most of my cold and flushed hands and feet and cold intolerance although I don't know if that could be the warmer weather...but last night was the first time I was warm and my wife was cold. So I encourage anyone with these symptoms to take LOTS of charcoal. I am doing 4 grams or so at least twice a day. The fat soluable porphyrins are cumulative unless you bind them and eliminate them as they keep getting reabsorbed. I waited 3 days to post this because I wanted to make sure it continued. I will never pulse Flagyl again without these large doses 3 times a day of charcoal.

That's great news on two counts; first, great for you to feel SO much better and wonderful for your bride to have somebody healthy and WARM to snuggle up to again.  Okay, okay, you've convinced me to add charcoal to the several dozen pills I now ingest daily!  I'll report back in a week.  Keep us updated?

I am taking 15 at a time with lots of water, at 10am, 3pm, and will do it in the middle of the night if I get up to go.

Good to know thanks for posting htis. I don;t take charcoal. Too much bother to work it in so I dont ry. You make it clear everyone really ought to at least rty this for themselves-that'll be me!

So good to hear you feel better. I too have under used charcoal. It has really helped me through some rough spots. I guess I will  start taking it 3 times a day instead of PRNi. One really has to watch the clock with this protocol to get all the pills in at percribed times. Charcoal it a hard one to work in as it should not be taken within 2 hrs of meds and food. Good feed back about your expeiience.

GOOD FOR YOU :) I too notice a difference with the tingling and ear ringing after charcoal.

Ha, so I'm not the only one who under uses charcoal! I find it really hard to fit it in during the day but it makes such a difference!! I was told to take it 3 times a day and in the hustle of my work day, I can barely find time to drink water as I should. Still, I have a window around 3pm where it fits and then at bedtime before I go to sleep. I take sublingual melatonini. That's the last med before I fall asleep. On another topic, I was keeping my intake of sugars very low (to prevent yeast infectionsi) but I realized I needed to increase carbs and dextrose. I began eating more pasta and naan bread(Trader Joe's has some great frozen naan--so good my little tabby cat begs for a bite) as well as a little honey. Also added whey powder shakes in the AM. This is giving me more energy to deal with a recently heavy workload. And don't neglect the B12! I was slacking off on my injection schedule when I needed it the most--post-Flagyli. From time to time, I need to realign my habits to conform more closely to the protocol. Like Golfbuddy says, you pay the price for not following the instructions! Raven

I went on an outing today and didn't bring charcoal with me. I won't make that mistake again. From now on I will skip meals before I will skip charcoal.

Janice, drop a bottle of it in your purse.  I always have my abxi for the day in a tiny bottle in my left jeans pocket (with my pocket knife) and my 2 eye meds in my right pocket and a bottle of extras in my purse.   Helps.

Thank you Rica for this great idea!  Keeping the daily doses handy in a pocket makes a lot of sense.   I live in a 2-story house, but used to keep all my meds in a bedside drawer--until the drawer got too small.  I have had an upstairs supply and a downstairs supply.  I am going for the little bottle in the pocket now--seems simpler, and you're more assured to take all your meds.

BTW Rica--I am really impressed with your 14-20 hour days of kidding around, LOL!

I agree -- charcoal discipline is really obtrusive in my life, but really beneficial in avoiding symptoms. I wish I knew whether tea fills up the little pockets on the charcoal that ought to be kept clear for the porphyrins -- I miss my tea.

But I really started this, not to whine about my tea, but to note the implications of:
I had never really thought I was having secondary porphyria symptoms because they were the same as my pre-protocol symptoms.
From Dr. Stratton's work on porphyria, it looks like anyone with persistant C. Pn. infection must be suffering sub-clinical secondary porphyria all the time.

I agree Ron. I figured this out the hard way. I wonder if I had eaten a lot of charcoal before I started the antibiotic protocol if I would have noticed the dramatic change.

Good Question!  Maybe one of us who is still a wannabe  could start taking charcoal now - it is a non poisonous, inert substance.

I volunteer! lol  I went ahead and took some today after reading this thread.  It's too soon to know whether or not I've had any reaction to it, although I can say I've had some odd stomach/bowel sounds shortly after taking it.  I'll keep you posted as soon as I know anything.  Just a side note though, my pc is having trouble and I'm trying to work it out, so I'll post as soon as I can.

RRMSi/EDSSi was 4.5, 5, 6, 6.5, 6.9999, 6.5 on Wheldon/Stratton Protocol beginning 04/12/2006

doxycycline 2x100mg/day
azithromycin 3x250mg/day MWF
metronidazole 3x400mg/day then 3x500mg/day

You'll need to do at least 5 grams (15 to 20 caps) 2 or 3 times a day.  I have had no side effects with that much except a bottle is gone in a few days.

Charcoal is cheaper at iHerb--I paid more than twice as much at a local health food store: http://store.yahoo.com/iherb/ac1.html Raven

I buy a lot of supplementsi from Puritan. Generally they have been as cheap or cheaper than anyone else and very reliable. (BTW I have no financial interest in them or any other supplement company.) In this case they are just a little cheaper when you do the math for their regular buy 1 get 1 free and even better if you buy 2 or more. But you have to buy a bigger (200 pill) bottle and at least 2 of them.

I didn't take that much.  I took 3 capsules (260 mg per, 4gr.).  I haven't noticed a lot although I do have an odd stomach feeling.  Could be normal, just thinking about it more than usual.  I went to the gym tonight and did a lot of work so I know that the charcoal should have had the chance to work its magic.  I probably simply didn't take enough.

John- 3 capsules probably just absorbs some stomach acid and that's about it. Dr. Stratton speaks of minimums of 12 capsules as a dose! I've never noticed anby dramatic effect from charcoal myself, until I found a way to take really profound amounts. There's a 'chocoloate-mint' flavored powdered charcoal where you can take big scoops of the stuff-- I'm talking 17 grams dose-- called EnteroKlenz. Pricey. And it's kind of like drinking chocolate-mint flavored Xerox toner. But it's enough dose to really work when I'm really toxic. Jeesh, the things we won't do to try and feel better.

I've been using capsules, but in light of these volumes went looking for a larger amount and found this reasonable resource http://healingherbs.biz/products/charcoal.html. It appears that a person can buy 12 bags of 113 grams each for 49. Even at Jim's huge dose this would be about 6+ doses a bag....thus about 80 doses for $49.

I have not used much of this as the doses I did try did not seem helpful. Now knowing the volumes necessary, it seems clear why. I am certain the taste would not inspire anyone but in light of the fact flagyl is worse than most anything I have tasted I can take it like a lady. I'm almost excited to try it next flagyl pulse and see what I get......
