Lysine and Arginine
Lysine and Arginine are amino acids. I had been taking Arginine as recommended by Dr. Powell. However, since my oral surgery I have had a herpes flare up on my lip (despite taking Valtrex)
Did a little digging and found that I should be taking Lysine not Arginine.

I have probably been getting less of it anyway because I have been eating less dairy products because of INHi.
Lysine, Lysine, Lysine!! Not Arginine!!!
Duh, I wish I had researched it more. I could have headed it off.

Oh poo! I'm sorry about the arginins lysine thing. I get cold sores also and am paranoid about them (terrified of getting them in my eyes) so I pay super attention to this kind of stuff all the time. Look out for a diet high in nuts and seeds as this is naturally high in arginine and will trigger them also. Herpes virus is egged on by arginine so a number of combination products on the supplement aisle will set you up for a flare up, so read labels. If I were not so paranoid about it I'd probably not fuss over it, but there you go. My eye doctor is good about letting me come in on the spur of the moment just so he can look in there and say "nope, you dodged it again Marie. Your eye is fine..." Maybe it's just my pranoia but when I have a cold sore my eyes itch and burn, it is just me or do you have that too? We all have our little peculiarities, that's mine: fear of eye infection. Still like me even though I'm goony?

Hi Raven, My partner suffers from herpes symplex and takes Lysine, which is very effective but only if taken at the same time as Vitamin C and B6. He has also cut out lager and chocolate -both are very high in Arginine. Another thing that helps is putting an earl grey teabags on the site of the lesion. Earl Grey contain Bergamot which works amazingly well on his cold sores. Alice
Alice- i love the idea of Earl Grey teabags on coldsores! The imagery of bags with their little strings and paper tags dangling, plastered on one's face is especially healing. Really though, I've always loved the taste and fragrance of bergamot, and will try this with my daughter who gets cold sores when she gets sick (I'll remove the tags first).

Yes, it has a certain 'genteel' lady bracknell gone insane ring about it. Now, green tea, of course, if fantastic for getting rid of blemishes and spots, as well as much more restorative for tired eyes than black tea.
Not much to do in the Shetlands during the winter, except sit around an open fire with tea bags on our faces:-)Alice, the teabag pharmacy inc.
