THURSDAY! The Long-awaited site UPGRADE

The site is about to be upgraded - BEGINNING THURSDAY, 26 April - and may be unavailable sporadically for up to a day.

Please be prepared for occasional outages and exchange email addresses or other info now, if there's someone you need to be in constant contact with.

Our web guy will put up a post when it's in process.

Kent, one VERY BIG trouble is the spam messages that Mac was having to deal with when people were trying to join the site. I don't have any of this trouble with my websites and neither does David, so can this site be kept clean?

Once somebody managed to get into one of my sites to add fake Versace handbags with my artworks and it took me ages to clean up the source code but I pay for a spam mail filter each year so have no bother with that.

Seeing that I have been quite negative about the progress so far, please allow me now to point out the biggest positive. The text is clear and easy to read. There is none of this microscopic text that has to be expanded in order to read it. That is a big plus. Bravo! Many people visiting this site will be suffering from visual impairment. I have mentioned this years ago but it didn't go down well. Easy to read text font cost nothing extra and is a great help to a great many people. I want to see clear BOLD text on a coloured background. For those designing this new website, please view it on a mobile phone; that is how I look at everything these days. If you look at it on a phone then those problems will stand out much more clearly. Please have text the whole width of the screen. You can easily do that if the labels are placed in a bubble above the posters text rather than beside it. That is my positive contribution for the month of May! G.

(All my formatting paragraphing isn't there but at least I can edit if I so choose)

SIGNATURES: we used to be able to add short signatures to posts, explaining who or what we were.  Not the most important thing, but useful for new members.

The recent content sidebars are not a real replacement for the page that used to show all recent posts (in all subforums) with the number of new messages in  each.  I used to read this site by going to that page, middle-clicking on each of the "new" links to open it in a new tab, and then scrolling down in each of those tabs until I'd finished with it.

Given that the theme has been a contentious issue, I have made it so that you can enable your own theme.  Edit your profile and right at the bottom is a theme field.   There are a bunch of standard Drupal themes and in addition Jethro and Mayo themes.  Mayo is most like the old theme and it has a bunch of settings allowing site admin to alter everything from fonts to page width.  However the comments aren't as well formatted as in the initial theme.

  • I've added the signature to the todo list
  • Where do we display the member list?  Is that a separate page?
  • Also should we have a separate page with list of all recent content?

- I've restored the signatures in comments, but I do think that they clutter up the page a little.  Maybe we can have some suggestions on how best to use them.

How important is it for people to be able to see old messages?  There is a new messaging system which you should all start using.  It is newly built and needs testing.

I agree Kent: maybe people can just click on the poster's name or look in the members list.

What about the spam mail that Mac was dealing with? I pay for a yearly filter on my sites so I don't get bothered

Not spam mail, per se, but spammers, trying to join the site.  Dozens and dozens of them each day, using stolen email addresses, trying to join the site so they COULD spam us once they were full-fledged members.

About PRIVATE MESSAGES : anything that I particularly need to see, I store on my PC, so I don't personally need to see old messages, but just need access to a new system.  I can't talk for anyone else though!

A recurring problem that I often had with the previous site was that I would often end up with a duplicate post. The big problem was that I could edit that duplicate post but had no power to delete it. I never really understood why but even our editor would not delete I posted comment that just had a full stop in it.

So I hope that we now have the ability to delete a comment that we've posted.

The short answer to that was, if anyone had responded to a post, I could not delete it without deleting everything attached to it, or any post that was posted AFTER it, so it was best not to delete the duplicate once there were responses to it or the original.  (I did edit the duplicate to say 'duplicate post' most of the time, though)

- The conversations tab is now enabled in My Account.  Thank-you, Sarah for bringing this to my attention.  It works as follows:

  1. Create a conversation.  You can include multiple people.  All messages you send in this conversation are visible to members of the conversation.
  2. You can create other conversations with different members

Please test the messaging system so we can ensure that it works as intended.

I'm now processing user account pictures.

Kent,  It's important for people to be able to access their old messages because there is information in those messages, such as personal contact info, doctor references,  specific items people did not want posted publicly, as well as other items I won't detail here on the public forum.  We were assured everything would transfer over smoothly.  Now, it's just gone?

There's nothing showing to indicate who is posting the first post in a new thread.

Ok, so - my 'go to' page on the site has always been the recent posts one, where I could see, in one glance, any new posts, both forum posts and blog posts. Posts which I hadn't read showed as 'new' and it was easy to go straight to the first unread post in a thread.

I know we have 'recent comments' and 'active forum topic', but I'm still really struggling to navigate things and feel I'm now far more likely to miss any new posts than see them.

I'd love to know if anyone has found a way to have more luck with it than I am having.

I have created a Recent Posts page and added it to the main menu.  These kinds of things can be added quickly in Drupal 8.

It shouldn't take too long to import the old messages into the new interface.  Give me a couple of days.

Regarding the theme, the Mayo theme would need some work to present better, but there may be better themes out there.

I’ve, already, tried to post! My comment may be here somewhere!

firstly, I need to say, I feel for you, i’ve been responsible for decisions made, effectively, by committee, and it’s impossible!

Now, my criticism, with apologies! The site looks much more professional, the primary colours were easier ... much easier, and I wouldn’t ever use these colours at home, but i’m much more likely to send other people here though they will need to find their way around!

i think you have received lots of comments on the lack of clarity here.  I wanted to find a user defined, formatting lin,k, although, i know, that would be expensive to add.

But, if i’m struggling to get around, post and find my recent posts, as someone well used to doing this, there must be an issue!

I also come from the perspective of a partially sighted user, and find the serif font, throughout,  very hard! This is why the new colours aren’t great, for me, however,  even though i may find more primary colours, or a more graphic interface preferable,  however, i want the CAP taken seriously and, by default, my belief in it.

Therefore, my criticisms come down, simplyy, to the lack of user friendliness!

good luck!

JJane

The recent content page from the menu is very helpful. But this thread isn't showing there and I don't think some of the threads showing are all that recent. I'm hoping a thread will jump to the top if a reply is posted, but it doesn't look as though it will at the moment. In an ideal world, we'd like to see recent blog posts appear there too, as we've all become used to, but not sure whether that's possible.

Just tried to start a conversation. Went to the conversation tab in my account. But when I selected 'start a new conversation' it took me straight back to the homepage.

Boadicea,  As always, thank you for your clear and concise critique.  You phrase it much more clearly than I would.  :-)
