THURSDAY! The Long-awaited site UPGRADE

Body

The site is about to be upgraded - BEGINNING THURSDAY, 26 April - and may be unavailable sporadically for up to a day. Please be prepared for occasional outages and exchange email addresses or other info now, if there's someone you need to be in constant contact with. Our web guy will put up a post when it's in process.

Comments

When you open a forum post to read it, there is nothing to show you who has written the opening post.

Yesterday recent posts was showing me 9 pages of recent posts to scroll through, which was much better, but today it's back to just 10 posts on the one page again.

Supaguy, if you go to My Account and edit, and change to the mayo theme, you can choose your color scheme.

If you click on Blogs on the main menu then on the page you go to is a link at the top to create a blog post.

Hi!

Well things certainly look far better with just that small change: the peach background. That makes it far easier to read for both those with and for those without any visual impairment. Whoever made that change: well done.

The text body is still squashed over to the right-hand side. You wouldn't do that on a sheet of paper and it doesn't work here either. Simply put the author's details above the post and then use the whole width of the page.

Anyway, once again, thanks for your efforts thus far.

Oh well, that didn't last long (the coloured background paper). Still, it was good while it lasted.

The front page seems to resemble much more of what it used to be like and we can now find stuff..

Sadly, I cannot find or find out how to post a new blog.

I'm still not seeing blog comments - not on my own blog or anyone else's. But it's bedtime now, so I'll look again another time. Thank you for all your efforts! We do appreciate it!

Thanks for noticing the blog comments missing.   They are now back.  I'm still working on the Conversations tab.  Server processes going overtime are preventing me from correcting this.  To explain:

- Conversations are - well, self explanatory.  First you create a conversation between you and one or more other members.

- Then you send and receive messages within that conversation.

This means that messages are all nicely contained in the conversation threads they belong to.

Conversation link still not working - if it was, I would have sent MacKintosh a hug. Another vote here for D's suggestion that conversations should be called messages.

We've always treated blog posts in the same way as forum posts and people comment on them. Using the blog tab to view blogs, it says there are comments on the various posts, but there seems no way to view them.  Same with our own blogs - all comments seem to have disappeared.

Hi all,

i will just mention only two issues as i do realise that there are a lot more and I am certain they will be fixed.

The messages are gone and the conversation link is not working, I do think that messages should be called messages... simple english is sometimes the best way to describe a feature.

The tabs on the top of the desktop site should be put in order of usage. Blogs - forums -books etc.... maybe this isn't the order they should be in.... recent content is last? This should be near the top of the list...

The mobile version of this site is way too busy! Very confusing and too much showing up on screen. There are too many confusing options and no clear wording for your navigation options. Too many options that bring you too the same place. I would be use to navagating sites and at one stage left the mobile site as my brain was fried from not understanding where it was going to bring me to.

I understand that there are going to be issues so the main working issues should be sorted ASAP as this will effect users and the cosmetic issues can be brushed up on as time goes by.

The main thing to remember is a site has to be user friendly and have clear signposts (navigation tools) to bring you to the places on the site you wish to visit. From what i experienced is that the potential is there for this site to be just that but there is a lot of work to be done to bring it up to this standard.

I will get back with more feedback once current issues are resolved..

Regards

D

Just tried to start a conversation. Went to the conversation tab in my account. But when I selected 'start a new conversation' it took me straight back to the homepage.

The recent content page from the menu is very helpful. But this thread isn't showing there and I don't think some of the threads showing are all that recent. I'm hoping a thread will jump to the top if a reply is posted, but it doesn't look as though it will at the moment. In an ideal world, we'd like to see recent blog posts appear there too, as we've all become used to, but not sure whether that's possible.

I’ve, already, tried to post! My comment may be here somewhere!

firstly, I need to say, I feel for you, i’ve been responsible for decisions made, effectively, by committee, and it’s impossible!

Now, my criticism, with apologies! The site looks much more professional, the primary colours were easier ... much easier, and I wouldn’t ever use these colours at home, but i’m much more likely to send other people here though they will need to find their way around!

i think you have received lots of comments on the lack of clarity here.  I wanted to find a user defined, formatting lin,k, although, i know, that would be expensive to add.

But, if i’m struggling to get around, post and find my recent posts, as someone well used to doing this, there must be an issue!

I also come from the perspective of a partially sighted user, and find the serif font, throughout,  very hard! This is why the new colours aren’t great, for me, however,  even though i may find more primary colours, or a more graphic interface preferable,  however, i want the CAP taken seriously and, by default, my belief in it.

Therefore, my criticisms come down, simplyy, to the lack of user friendliness!

good luck!

JJane

I have created a Recent Posts page and added it to the main menu.  These kinds of things can be added quickly in Drupal 8.

It shouldn't take too long to import the old messages into the new interface.  Give me a couple of days.

Regarding the theme, the Mayo theme would need some work to present better, but there may be better themes out there.

Ok, so - my 'go to' page on the site has always been the recent posts one, where I could see, in one glance, any new posts, both forum posts and blog posts. Posts which I hadn't read showed as 'new' and it was easy to go straight to the first unread post in a thread.

I know we have 'recent comments' and 'active forum topic', but I'm still really struggling to navigate things and feel I'm now far more likely to miss any new posts than see them.

I'd love to know if anyone has found a way to have more luck with it than I am having.

There's nothing showing to indicate who is posting the first post in a new thread.

Kent,  It's important for people to be able to access their old messages because there is information in those messages, such as personal contact info, doctor references,  specific items people did not want posted publicly, as well as other items I won't detail here on the public forum.  We were assured everything would transfer over smoothly.  Now, it's just gone?

- The conversations tab is now enabled in My Account.  Thank-you, Sarah for bringing this to my attention.  It works as follows:

  1. Create a conversation.  You can include multiple people.  All messages you send in this conversation are visible to members of the conversation.
  2. You can create other conversations with different members

Please test the messaging system so we can ensure that it works as intended.

I'm now processing user account pictures.

A recurring problem that I often had with the previous site was that I would often end up with a duplicate post. The big problem was that I could edit that duplicate post but had no power to delete it. I never really understood why but even our editor would not delete I posted comment that just had a full stop in it.

So I hope that we now have the ability to delete a comment that we've posted.

The short answer to that was, if anyone had responded to a post, I could not delete it without deleting everything attached to it, or any post that was posted AFTER it, so it was best not to delete the duplicate once there were responses to it or the original.  (I did edit the duplicate to say 'duplicate post' most of the time, though)

About PRIVATE MESSAGES : anything that I particularly need to see, I store on my PC, so I don't personally need to see old messages, but just need access to a new system.  I can't talk for anyone else though!

What about the spam mail that Mac was dealing with? I pay for a yearly filter on my sites so I don't get bothered

Not spam mail, per se, but spammers, trying to join the site.  Dozens and dozens of them each day, using stolen email addresses, trying to join the site so they COULD spam us once they were full-fledged members.

- I've restored the signatures in comments, but I do think that they clutter up the page a little.  Maybe we can have some suggestions on how best to use them.

How important is it for people to be able to see old messages?  There is a new messaging system which you should all start using.  It is newly built and needs testing.

I agree Kent: maybe people can just click on the poster's name or look in the members list.
