Rifampin-resistant mutants of the obligate intracellularⁱ pathogen Chlamydia pneumoniae were isolated and characterized, including strains that contained multiple mutations in the rpoB gene encoding the rifampin binding site. The highest MIC of rifampin against a mutant strain exceeded 100 mug/ml, whereas the highest MIC of rifalazil was 0.125 mug/ml. Derivatives of rifalazil (new chemical entities; NCEs) showed from 2~4 fold lower MICs, as well as 2~8 fold lower bactericidal concentrations against both wild type and mutant strains when compared with rifalazil. These results suggest that rifalazil and NCEs are appropriate therapeutic agents for the treatment of C. pneumoniae infectionsⁱ from the point of view of potency and resistance development.

Anyone know if this antibiotic is available?

CAPⁱ since 11/06 for Cpnⁱ, Lyme, Bartonella, Babesia, Myco P, CMV, HHV-6 infectionsⁱ. Rifampin 600mg daily, Zithromax 500mg daily. NACⁱ 2250mg daily. All other supplementsⁱ. Now Bicillin LA 2.4 mil injection weekly.

This is pertinent to those of us on Rifampin, Azithromycin, and, of course, Doxycycline. I am hoping I am in my last year - less now - and will continue to be careful never to miss any abxⁱ. Good one, Red!
