Don't worry: all is going smoothly: I will be talking with a designer tomorrow.

Yikes! For some reason, the text box wasn't appearing for me, so I couldn't post. All god now.

All cured now, so time to start creatiing.

So do we want a custom-built site or Drupal 8? I now have access to absolutely everything still in existence so I have arranged the discussion with the web-site designer for early next week, so that I can sort through everything.

Neither, I'd think. Drupal seems to be getting senile (in the way that programs do), while a custom-built site would take a lot of custom programming (and thus expense). Well, it could make sense to have some of the pages (introductory and background material) be outside the forum software, but forum software is not something to try to cook oneself. (Of course I may be misconstruing what exactly "custom-built" means here, but it seems to me the choice would be between the various forum packages that are out there.)

Well, I will see what custom built by Iomart (Easyspace) means tomorrow, but I just don't want it all messed up again.

Norman, what package night you go for? I didn't really like Wordpress when I was using that, because I had far to many offers of ftv and I really dislike Drupal.

Wordpress is for blogs; there are comment plugins which allow for discussions, but it's not primarily discussion forum software. Besides, like Drupal, it's an old piece of software written in PHP, about which see: https://eev.ee/blog/2012/04/09/php-a-fractal-of-bad-design/ And that's not just a theoretical objection; Wordpress has to be kept updated since people are constantly finding new security holes in it, and updating it is a pain. As for discussion software, I've never done a survey of what is available, but I've heard good things about Discourse.

Thanks Norman, but hopefully I will be able to stick with Iomart. I should get some idea tomorrow. You know, I had no idea that Drupal didn't use ftp: I just don't know how to put anything on the site or take it off, so I'm glad that at least the spamming is now better than it was!
