Please forgive me if this has been discussed before. I have been through many of the archives and haven't found the answer to my question yet! Perhaps I'm not very good at searching.I have been taking NAC for two days now (600mg) and the first night I had a definite reaction- feverish, muscle aches, burning skin, sinus issues. However, as I have looked around the web, NAC is recommended for chronic fatigue to boost glutathione levels, to improve immune function and as a liver support.

hope, what Daisy says is exactly right. When Dr. R and I began NAC we jumped right in at 2400 mg (broken into 2 doses of 1200 mg) and take that each and every day. Your reaction should give you tne answer to your question about your carrying this bug - if you asked.
May I ask a personal question? Since you are not here in person, I will go ahead - are you hopi?

Also, remember to take the Vit E & Selenium doses as recommended here on the supplement list, as I think they replenish glutathione as well - meaning the NAC is mainly bursting the EB spores and not just replenishing glutathione - I think I'm right there - anybody?

Mark -
You are correct. NAC needs co-factors Selenium and Vita E to produce glutathione.
To a certain degree you ingest NAC, Selenium and Vita E in your food (depending on what sort of eater you are) so you would theoretically boost glutathione by increasing just the NAC. To be optimal though you would also add Selenium and Vita E.
For me - I took 2400mg NAC from day one in a single dose. Nothing too much happened. Then I added 200 mcg Selenium and 400 IU Vita E and then WHAM - I could rival Paula for tissue consumption. At one point I just held my head over the sink while it ran out - YUCK !
So in short - NAC alone will boost glutathione production but for optimal production you should probably add the co-factors.

Thank you all for your responses! I took 1200mg tonight, so I'll see how that goes.
Regarding the Selenium and Vit E- they are in my regular multi vitamin, so I hope that will be enough.
Thanks again,

Hopi, in my opinion most people with chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms carry cpn so its somewhat of an arguement as to whether or not the 2 phenomenum arent just one of the same thing and that the glutathiones methods of helping chronic fatigue syndrome is simply the method as daisy explains
" increased detox as a result of increased glutathione and the disulphide bonds on the EBi form of CpNi and mold gliotoxins being broken. "
Anyway how did the 1500 go?

I have never heard of NAC doing that. I take 12oo mg of NAC a day with my regiment. I would have to say its the die off effect.
Fibro, CFS, Myco, CPN, Stratton protocol, Zithro 500mg M/W/F/S, Doxy 100mg 2x day, NAC 1200mg 2x day, Flagyl and INH 2 week pulses 400 mg 3x day, Rifampin, 300mg 2x day, Still cant shake it but improving.

How did the 1200mg go?
Well, the first night after I took it, I had a sensation like there were huge worms crawling all over my head. It was a little freaky.
Since then I have actually felt better overall, with no other strange effects. I wonder if the improvement is due to the increased glutathione.
I am nervous to try antibiotics long term, so I am in a "let's try NAC for awhile and see what happens" mode. And continuing to follow the discussions on this site!
Thanks again for everyone's helpful information!

Hopi- My take on it is that those who get a delayed reaction to NAC, like a week or so with no reaction and then the WHAM when the ramp up the dose a couple weeks in, are doing so because most of the NAC is getting sucked up by the cells to make otherwise depleted glutathione, i.e it's not until there is an excess of NAC available that blood levels build up enough to kill the the EB's. I had I.V. glutathione push prior to the CAP with no significant "flu" reactions such as what the NAC produced.

Many others have asked this good question!
The answer, I think is that it's probably some combination of the glutathione being replenished, increased detox as a result of increased glutathione and the disulphide bonds on the EB form of CpN and mold gliotoxins being broken.
I have had that same question and have come to the conclusion that while the scientist in me would like to know for sure ... either way - it's all a good thing !
600 mg is only 25% of the dose of NAC commonly recommended here so you will probably gain a better idea of what is going on for you as you titrate the dose of NAC up over time and certainly as you add the antibiotics.
Good luck with your treatment !
