The bright and beautiful  two year old son of a friend is exhibiting symptoms of  autism. (Won't make eye contact, won't respond to his name, beginning to withdraw into his own world.)  Recently, there was a peripheral conversation here about going gluten-free having an effect of autism. Someone else then responded that it can take a year to clear the body of gluten?

Hey MacKintosh!Probably was me.  OK--just have a second--all in my....lengthy  lol....blogs.Wish I had known when our son was 2.  GREAT hope!  :)Kill the dairy 100%, start probiotics.  Then....study.   :)We saw a noticeable improvement in the first week.  :)Katherine

I suggest that your friends look into the link between Methylation Cycle defects and Autism. Dr Amy yask, who is one the BIG experts in this, is finding something like 98% of Autistic children have genetic blocks in this cycle. This may be all or part of the puzzle, together with exposure to Heavy Metals, Toxins or Infectious Agents.Dr Kendal Stewart is also expert in this area....... this video is quite easy listening.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5m2jfiSnN4http://www.dramyyasko.com/I have just been reading a book on Vitamin B12 deficiency. There is a whole chapter on the link between Vit B12 and Autism. B12 is linked in with the whole Methylation thing, but 'simple' B12 deficiency in babies and children is common, but hardly ever looked for.....Get B12 and Folate levels.

Mac',Garth Nicolson has some of his own relevant research and comments about Autistism Spectrum Disorders on his site: www.immed.org. I suggest you go there to read his findings about chronic infective "bugs," plus the more common speculations about the causes of Autism.  On his home page there is a list of topics on the left.. If you click on Neurodegenerative and Neurobehavioral Disorders, then scroll down past ALS, AD, and MS, Autistic Spectrum Disorders are the next. topic. Toward the end of this piece, the findings begin to sound familiar.I remember  seeing a video made of one of his lectures linking the numerous required infective agents innoculated into an infant, at relatively brief intervals, overwhelming the child's immature immune system, crossing the BB barrier and possibly causing the Autism problems. I think he said that less than 6% of the vaccines were found to be comtaminated but i don't recall with what: stealth pathogens?? This would give credence to your theory of treatment for infection.for what it's worth(?)Betsy

Mackintosh, Finally I can pipe in here with some actual insight. My daughter who is now 12 exhibted all of these signs and then some by the age of 2.5. By four years old she could not look at me she had no imagination. She never pretend played she just moved toys from one location to the next or lined them up. She could not put two words together, but if you asked her to go get something she could follow simple instructions. Her laughter was infectious and music to my ears but I could not connect with her on most levels. SHe couldn't even tell me she was four years old when someone asked her how old she was. I felt as if I had lost her. She was literally being held  prisoner in her own mind.I tried removing Casein from her diet cause it was simpler but when I didn't notice anything I bit the bullet and spent hours in the store with my 3 inch binder full of ingredients she could not have and finally removed the gluten from her diet. Within ONE MONTH my flower bloomed. She started looking at me when I talked to her-HUGE. Then words started coming. The girl who could not put her hands on the handle bars and feet on the pedals at the same time actually rode around the block. Before, I had to push her and she wouldn't even look straight ahead. Her head always rambled left to right aimlessly. Within a month she was looking straight ahead and riding the bike. It was miraculous.  From that moment on it was like planting a garden and watching it grow.  The doctor that advised me to cut out the gluten said that these poor kids don't break down the protein completely and they actually form something called geomorphine (sp?) which passes through their leaky gut into the blood and through the Blood Brain Barrier. HE said this compound is 10x stronger than morphine and it shuts down the brain and blocks pathways.  He said that you have to be relentless about adhering to it. Not a crumb of bread or small bite of cake. You could think it's not working because you are unknowingly given them gluten.  The only way to know for sure is to buy only products specifically labeled gluten free and/or cook from scratch from only gluten free ingredients.  I though KFC grilled chicken was gluten free for example but when I called the company I found out it's not.  Vanilla extract can have gluten, another example. Now get this, a French researcher named Luc Montagnier says latent infections cause autism and antibiotic therapy is reversing symptoms in 4 out of 5 autistic kids. That is why I plan on trying this with my daughter once I can get my strength back. I just think it is oddly coincidental that I would come across CPNHelp about the same time I find this study from Mr Montagnier.  I'm very excited about the possibilities and I pray that God is doing the pointing here.Julie

You guys are wonderful!!  Thank you! Keep 'em coming, please. This is one of the first people  I told about the MS .  He was my admin assistant at work, and kept me from becoming  a failure as the MS took its toll.  He also  babysat me through treatment and cheered me from the front row as  I recovered.  Whatever I can do to help him and his family, it will never be enough.

I seem the remember ( from the GlutenFreeAndBeyond Forum )  That it takes 5-7 days to get Gluten out of the body,  up to a year to heal the gut from Villous Atrophy, and up to 2 years to heal neurological damage such as Encephalopathy or Ataxia .Anne

One of the three doctors who have told either Brianna or I to not eat gluten said that one bite of gluten laden food sets up an immune response that stays in your system for 6 months. If this is true it really is a daunting task to keep it out of your body long term. It's so easy to find yourself eating something you thought was gluten free but wasn't. I have very bad Ataxia and it keeps getting worse.

Awww thank you Anne you just brought tears to my eyes. No fair!  I'm just glad more moms are becoming aware of this, because autism is robbing families of their joy and taking children from their parents. I believe there is an answer for autism, but it is different for each kid. Just like MS. I don't think it's a coincidence that my daughter and I both have autoimmune dieases. Maybe we are both harboring this bug. Does anyone know if you can pass on a pathogen to your baby in utero?
