Am I infectious to others whilst I have CPN

Hi  I have had tests for Lyme recently and tested positivre for CPN. I woul;d like to know if I am infectious to others. Ironically I get few colds/infections. The last chest infection I had was 5 years ago. Can I pass this on to others?

Basically, no. Most of the time, you're not. You're inefectious when you have an active lung infection, when you're coughing and nose-blowing on others.

Ridiculous.  (Are you sure the online service wasn't referring to the STD, chlamydia trachomatis?) But, by the age of fifty, the majority of the population shows exposure to cpn according to one report, so it's not like you're patient zero, going around infecting the world.  Besides, you're about to become a former cpn patient!  Cool

Appreciate your reply.No it was'nt the STD. It was CPN. The Dr said you should not be around the very young or the imunospressed! I thought I should not be out in public! What do we do lock ourselves away!!I know this is going to sound barmy but if it takes so long to rid of this bacteria why do we bother when we can be reinfected straight away. I'm really not trying to be obtuse just trying to get my head around it.

Elizabeth, best not to listen to NHS direct people, they are just wannabe experts.  This one was talking rubbish. How ill do you feel?  Do you have MS, asthma or chronic fatigue?  Your signature doesn’t say anything.  You might get away with a year on antibiotics, then NAC everyday to prevent reinfection so things aren’t dire.....................SarahA Journey through Light and Shadow

Thanks Sarah for you reply. The Dr involved was an American on one of the sites that you pay for an opinion. Nobody has been able to really say for sure whether or not I would be contagious. This not knowing has really freaked me out. The Dr went on to say your sputum would be infected until antibiotics eradicated it.To be quite honest this has really rattled me. I dont get many colds. Had flu 5 years ago and nothing in between. I dont have fever or anything like that.I do have awful muscle joint pains.Am just wondering if NAC would interfere with natural dessicated thyroid. I am hypo thyroid.Sorry if my questions are all over the place.

Elizabeth, I have never come across a site where you pay for a doctor’s advice!  How do you know, paying or not, that the person is a real medical doctor? Look, you will only pass on the infection if you make a habit of sneezing in someone’s face or indulge in deep kissing.  You can safely kiss  either a baby or your aunt on the cheek.  As for deep kissing, I guess you are both infected so don’t worry. Since you will be surrounded by people who are likewise infected, there is no real problem,  especially if you are not prone to colds and don’t spend the winter coughing your guts up, like I used to. Start taking NAC now: it won’t interfere with your natural thyroid medication. By the way, awful muscle and joint ache sounds more like it could well be lyme disease in the lack of other symptoms: how was your test for that?....................SarahA Journey through Light and Shadow

MSWife, maybe everyone should take NAC as a preventative measure since it also guards agaist ‘flu and so will help avert the outbreak of the next ‘flu pandemic.  You can get tablets of 1000 mg, which is what I take every day....................SarahA Journey through Light and Shadow

To refresh the topic, isn't it fair to say that often when some has Cpn, and experiencing problems from it, others in the same household also have? At least that is what I get from reading some forum posts, that often couples are doing the CAP treatment together? I am trying to understand, if I will be more around my mom when she starts CAP, that I won't become contagious to my kids.

Here for my mother. She has been having neurological and other health problems that were unexplained for many years and just recently a test showed positive for Cpn and Mycoplasma. Still trying to understand more about Cpn, treatment and possibly start it soon.

Loby, I understand your worries but I doubt very much that your mother's cpn is infectious: David and I must have both had the infection before we even met, since my MS had started about ten years previously and David's problems had begun even earlier.  We did both get a reinfection together, but who got it first and where from, I have no idea.

 

Your children are far more likely to catch the infection just by going to school and living a normal life.

Thank you, Sarah! I have read that almost everyone sooner or later are exposed to it, but it is not like the ones that don't get problems from it are developing immunity (or are they?). I was wondering if too much exposure wouldn't be too bad.

Just take the normal precautions you would take if she exhibits a lung infection, with coughing and sneezing.  It's very unlikely that'll even happen while she's on the protocol, but if she DOES show an active illness, do a lot of handwashing and keep some distance. 

Your kids touch handrails and doorknobs and share drinks with other kids (yes, they probably do), so making yourself crazy over things you can't control is pointless.  Many people are exposed and never develop any issues. It depends on genetics and immune system health and probably a number of other things.  Stop worrying away at it.
