No, its Anti-viral.  The primary substance that he wanted me to have is interferon.  Which, now that you ask, doesn't sound very natural.  But, the packaging does say homeopathic.  Its made by Guna Inc. (biotherapeutics).  The first few ingredients are beta Endorphin 4C, Interferon gammai 3C, Blood, Porcine 4C and Interleukin 2 5C...

Marcia, i am not well up on antivirals, so really no better off than you on this but my first action when faced with such a question is to turn to google.  

This what I found... Nothing about the side effects of Guna Virus apart from the description of the drug and its application, also a bit of a concern for me was the dosage... homeopathic remedies are usually administered in tiny doses... don't know what to make of that as the ingredients you quote don't actually tell us how much of these there is in the dose you are taking.  

But for the sake of answering your question I looked at the side effects of another interferon drug, Rebif, a more commonly administered drug for MS and this is what it said about adverse reactions:

The most commonly reported adverse reactions were injection site disorders, influenza-like symptoms (headache, fatigue, fever, rigors, chest pain, back pain, myalgia), abdominal pain, depression, elevation of liver enzymes and hematologic abnormalities.

The homeopathic Guna Virus looks like quite a mixture of remedies but they are all in very low potencies and unlikely to stimulate the sort of response you seem to be having.  It seems to be a general anti-viral rather than a homeopathically prescribed remedy so I'd guess your doctor has given you it as a support while taking the anti-virals (looks interesting though, I'll read up on it)  Your observation that upping the Valtrex made you feel worse could be your best clue.

Thanks for the feedback.  I left out an important point.  I felt so bad that I didn't do a very good job of explaining things.  My head was pounding-almost too sick to ask for help.

You are correct, I did get sick when I increased the Valtrax.  It was after this that my doc added Lysine and Guna Virus(yes, more of a supportive role).  I've been on all three for a week now.  And I still don't feel any better.  Shouldn't my body be adjusted to the dose of Valtrax by now?

Any ideas of what I can do to get to feeling better?

Thanks for the info.  I don't think the dose of interferon is high at all.  As Elinor suggested, the Guna Virus is probably more of a supportive thing. 

And, I got sick after increasing the Valtrex.  That happened about 5 days before my doc added the Lysine and Guna Virus.  So, I'm back to the question-Can anti-virals cause a die off like response?  And, does anyone have an idea what I can do to get to feeling better?

Marcia- Montoya of the UCLA Valcyte studies with CFIDSi reported that a number of patients got significant die-off a couple weeks into the protocol, so it is quite possible that killing viruses (many die in the "suppression") will give a die off. Especially if your viral load is high, which you say it is. 3 grams of Valtrex is a significant dose, and the added lysine will potentiate it. I don't know about the other. But kill those buggers-- they aren't doing you any good!

Thank you, thank you.  I couldn't find any information that would clarify things for me.  I'm not less sick for having a better understanding-but, at least you have assured me that I'm not crazy.  Yes, the dose is significant.  In fact, I'm wondering about that.  Some on this site were put on 2 grams/day by Dr. Powell.  I've checked Rxlist and a couple of others and have not found a dose any higher than 2 grams/day.  I'm a little concerned about the dose but my doctor is a toxicologists-surely he realizes the risk???

Here are my lab results.

One of these is acute and one is chronic.

I have read that die off of a large load of virus can cause significant die off symptoms.  My suggestion would be to drop your dosage of Valtrex down to a point where you feel better and then gradually increase the dose as you tolerate it.

Hi Tina,

I'm one of these people who needs to understand what is going on.  Everything I read about Valtrex said that it suppressed rather than killed the virus so I couldn't understand why I was experiencing die-off.  However, yours and Jim's message helped me understand that some of the virus dies during the suppression-especially when high viral loads are present.

Also, I found a couple of folks on this site who experienced a similar reaction when they took anti-virals.  I'm not the only one (thank the Lord).

I did reduce the dose from 2 gms/day to 1500mgs.  But, at the same time, I added the Lysine and Guna Virus.  From what Jim said, I was probably at the peak time for die off to begin-so I made it worse by adding 2 more anti-virals.  Live and learn.

Now that I've learned all of this, I've been on the above for 8 days.  I've temporarily dropped the Lysine and Guna Virus.  If I don't feel better in the next day or two, I may have to decrease the Valtrex. 

Does that sound like a reasonable plan???
