CP contagious within the family?

Body

I am sure this has been answered but I cannot find it.  If I have had CP for more than 10 to 12 years, can I pass this to my wife and kids while it is active and I am coughing?  If so it would seem that my wife is also a good candidate for gettind CP, is that logical?  She does have several CFS symptoms but no cough. Also how many of you have CP but without the cough?  All the Best, Fresh Air

As I remember, 70% of people carry cpn.  Many of us only have a "cold", some of us pneumonia, and others a deep chest "thing".  For decades, every time I got a "cold", it became a deep chest infection that lasted months.  I suppose I infected many p[eople over the years, but I got it somewhere....Rica

Rica,I think you are correct and I too had those deep chest colds about every other year that would only go away with ABX but they were not long enough treatments to treat the disease. All the Best, Fresh

From what admittedly little we know, you likely aren't contagious unless you have an active infection, with the coughing and spewing that usually accompany it. No different than being contagious when you have a cold or flu. It probably explains why the incidence of MS is a bit higher among family members and/or co-workers than not.I was sort of surprised to find how many of my co-workers had MS, compared to the general population, but in my work, we were physically pretty exposed to each other (more than most) and we were the sort who drag ourselves to work whether sick or not. I know I went to work twice, through bouts of walking pneumonia, and probably unknowingly exposed dozens of people to cpn.  Multiply that by hundreds of employees doing the same thing.  Yuck. So, yes, you might be contagious when you're actively sick, but take normal precautions.  As far as your wife having symptoms, she might want to be tested or treat based on NAC reactions, but it sounds like there's no time-pressure on that.  Most of us here have been sick/infected for a long time.  Recovery takes a long time, too.  Rarely (Sarah was an exception) is it necessary to rush into this.
