Let me begin by saying the following is an email I received from a friend this morning. He is not aware of my diagnosis, so it was just something he felt important to send to his friends and family. He's a Chinese medicine practitioner and doesn't think much of chemicals on a good day. My response was that I'd argue a few of the points contained therein, but would love to know who the author is. I'm suspicious of anonymous authors. So, what are your thoughts?

I never touch the stuff knowingly.  Back when it first came out so many years ago now.  I empirically noticed that it caused me a temporary mental confusion type effect.  Repeated the experiment and the effect at the time was the same.  It was banned from my household as really most carbonated beverages were except for the two bottles of full sugar Seven Up, in the back of the cabinet on reserver of real bouts of intake inhibiting NVD, (Nausea, vomitting, diarrhea abbreviation) illness.  This is why I find it so ironic that part of this protocol is reason to put more glucose into my system!  The old adage  "Never say never about nothing" ( anything) Image removed..  Or "Everything in moderation" are favorites of mine.

Whole foods are harder to adulterate but.....  then we could talk about the quality of the soil they are grown on, and chemicals used in popagation of the plants.  Alar (Spelling?) in the past, was used in apple orchards etc, etc, etc.

Think I will bow out from the medical toxicology thread.  There is just so much that can be know about everything. This is truely the age of information.     I am thankful for the information on this site about CAP and CPn. etc. etc. etc.

Well, get me on the Aspartame celebrity roast because I'm ready. I also first began having sensory issues way back in 1981 when Nutrasweet-laced soda was the new craze. I say 'laced' because it lends itself more to the poison that I personally think it is. I was a college student and ate my share of fast food as well. It took me a couple years to figure out that it was the cause of the pounding headaches and nausea that I suffered.

Since then I have banned it from my household, which means everything, even chewing gum. Fortunately the trace exposure my kids have had has produced no symptoms or ill effects. They are ultra aware and are avid food label readers.

Currently my major concern is that companies are even adding it to their sugar-sweetened products. Examples: Low-sugar jams and jellies, kids cereal touted as having 'less sugar', even my old favorite brand of cocoa mix is now on my blacklist. I fear that very soon all processed foods will have some amount of aspartame.

If I accidentally eat an aspartame-laced product, my tongue spasms on contact, with nausea quickly following. What about the people who aren't affected? Are they not at risk? Or is it like the age old question, If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it still make an sound"?

Mac, here's some info on Dr. Blaylock's book: Aspertame: The Taste That Kills.

Aspartame and MSG are both excitotoxins. My doctors feels strongly enough about these that he sent handouts to his patients on what to avoid.

We use organic agave nectar or Stevia at our house these days.
And to think I used to drink diet sodas in the '80s as if they were health drinks!!!I finally convinced my husband to drink iced tea instead Diet Coke.

Sometimes I feel like the endotoxins, porphyrins and all the other things(HSProteins) that are stirred up by Cpn infection are excitotoxins too. Nerves and brain cells are overstimulated until they die off.

Raven I've never heard the term excitotoxins before, so now I have my homework cut out for me tonight. Does this learning thing never end? Image removed.

The article that is referred to in the first post is often associated as being on the quack watch.  It has shown up on a lot of sites over the years.

As far as aspartame, it gives me severe vertigo.  I have not gotten ahold of any in over a dozen years, but I read labels on everything I buy and avoid this ingredient like the plague.

It does not cause MS, in my opinion, but does cause MS like symptoms when ingested.  All a persopn has to do is quit eating it and the symptoms go away.

I'll weigh in now. I didn't want to prejudice any responses with my own.

I've long argued with friends that aspartame does not cause MS. I've even referred them to Snopes.com regarding messages like this. However, this is the first one to be so lengthy and 'specific'. The others almost felt like they were sour grapes of one sort or another.

Before diagnosis, I was drinking as many as six cans of diet caffeine-whatever a day. Coke, Pepsi, as long as it had caffeine and could help me function better. I noticed, if I drank 'brown' diet soda, I was getting headaches and a little depression. If I drank clear diet soda, I was okay. Logic said, cut out the brown color and I continued drinking the stuff.

After diagnosis, I asked my neuro if I should cut out diet soda and he said he'd have MS himself if aspartame were the cause, and not to worry about it. I pretty much quit it, rationalizing I shouldn't be ingesting any chemical if I could avoid doing so.

Now, I notice it if I eat or drink aspartame. I sort of 'vibrate' inside, for lack of a better desription. I've twice noticed it when I thought I'd had no aspartame, then found out I'd inadvertently gotten it in Burger King's rasberry iced tea each time. (It's made that way and they don't label it as such.) While I don't know what causes the reaction, a reaction it is, nonetheless, and I'm staying off the stuff. Have to go learn about excitotoxins now...

Mac, here's Dr. Blaylock's personal web site. He has some interesting posts here.

Under the Information link is a paper he wrote about: Regimentation in Medicine and the Death of Creativity

It is similar to what David is saying in his Medicine is Ruled by Fashion--but his take is that the creative thinker in medicine is being discouraged and regimented.
Definitely worth a read.

I can't add anything, except that I gave up all things with aspartame, when I was a teen in the 80's. I was not health-conscious then, just experienced headaches whenever I consumed it. And, also remember that it was in the news that people were dying from drinking it when mixed with alcohol. So, definitely tend to believe that it probably has nothing to do with my case of MS

There was an excellent article on Aspartame in the September 2005 edition of The Ecologist magazine. I've just managed to find an online version here. Well worth reading.

Aspartame is truly a drug with a chequered history (note the Donald Rumsfeld connection - he was instrumental in getting the drug first approved).
