Are CAP antibiotics expensive to obtain in U.K?

Dear All,

I am still at the research stage, and taking general health supplementsi like NACi, etc.  The general picture seems to be getting clearer thanks to all the input of people i have been communicating with recently.

I do however have a question about expense.  If i had to buy the various antibiotics in the Wheldon protocol here in the UK - would it be prohibitively expensive?  someone told me the other day she was paying about £80 for 6 months supply of Doxyi, which sounds v. reasonable.  Is that generally the case, and the case for the other antibiotics mentioned?  Out of curiosity, also Valeran (sp?), an anti-viral drug - is that expensive to buy on net?

thanks

miss blackfoot

Hi Blackfoot, this isn't easy to answer as it really depends where you get them from, if you can get your GP to prescribe then you'll only pay the NHS prescription charge as all the antibiotics are available here but if you have to get private prescriptions (as I do) then the sky's the limit!  Pharmacies can charge whatever they like and the supermarkets aren't competitive so it's worth ringing around to ask as  even with the cheaper abxi like doxy it can vary quite a lot.  If you look at some websites you'll get an idea of what you could pay as all the abxi we take are available on line.

To give you an idea....for one months supply I usually pay about £18 - £24 for doxy and  £20 - £30 for tinii from local chemists and about £30 for roxi but this I have to order online as no-one here stocks it (or has the wit to get it in)

It can pay to check in advance as they don't stick to the same prices all the time either, for instance Tesco were charging about £21 for 20 tinidazole tablets but last week it was £50 for 20.......however I have to say that whatever the antibiotics cost it really is a small price to pay for the rewards of the CAPi

Elinor ..... from England  on CAP, doxy/roxi/tini  for ME/CFSi/lyme borreliosis, positive Cpni and borrelia. Started Aug05, stopped Jan06, started again Sept 06.

Thank you Elinor.  One further question i have is on quality.  Are all these antibioticsi bought on-line or from pharmacists the same in terms of quality.  e.g. is Doxyi, the same doxy whatever manufacturer makes it, i.e. neither inferior or superior products.

perhaps some of these questions will be answered in the 50-page CPNi handbook.  my next job will be to print it out and read it all!

many thanks.
