Activated Charcoal- To soot your nerves

Body

Since activated charcoal is such an important thing on the protocol for soaking up gut laden porphyrins and endotoxin so it's not reabsorbed, seemed worthy of a thread of it's own: sources of supply, variations etc. I posted on a product I've used (see below) which gets a whopping amount of charcoal into you at once (17.6 grams per tablespoon!) and is chocolate mint flavored when mixed in water to boot. It is pricey, however, and it looks and handles like Xerox toner!

Comments

Doesn't the flavoring fill up some of the holes in the activated charcoal? I've been doing nothing but plain water 2hours before & after, on the theory that any flavoring (tea! ginger tea! other favorites!) would take up some of the charcoal's absorptive capacity.

[KK2 wirenews]--lol!

I just rec'd my industrial-sized tub of chocolate mint flavored activated charcoal powder.  But, my sweet feelings about the ease of use, and not having to swallow handfulls of gelcaps soon turned to sour when I noticed that an artificial sweetener, sucralose, is listed in the fine print.  Most with ms avoid nutrasweet and sucralose as they can cause a myriad of neuro-symptoms, including painful  migraines and exascerbating ms symptoms.

Hopefully, this is not a serious problem for the masses, but, for me, it's back to the gel caps.  :(

Wheldon Protocol for rrms since Oct '05.  Added LDN 4.5mg qhs Oct '07.  All supp's.  Positive IGG's for Lyme Disease,Babesia, & Erlichiosis Sept. 2008.  Currently:  Mepron 750mg bid and Azithromycin 250mg qd for Babesia.

I also read a study whereby some fibromyalgia patients at the University of Florida were able to attain almost complete remission by avoiding nutrasweet- this subset had significant allergy symptoms. But I know plenty of people (at least via the net) with MS, CFS and FMS who don't find artifical sweeteners to be a factor...all this stuff is so multi-factorial and individualized!.

I have considered doing some dietary elimination stuff eventually, but I doubt I would have any results (with CFS/FMS). I don't have the allergic symptoms that UF found a connection with.

Kitkat,

I also use some super active charcoal powder, which is much better, than capsuls, because you can take for example whole spoon. It is without flavour or additional things. Here . You must have something like this in your country also or you can try order this.

Also, the "cheap source of straight powder is http://healingherbs.biz/products/charcoal.html

At 16-ounce (1lb / 453g) $14.99 + free shipping!*" mentioned in my earlier post is a non-flavored powder. Sorry about the sucralose. It's a very small amount and I don't seem to have any problems with it, but didn't occur to me it could be a problem for some. Guess it's just plain toner water for you KK!

How come nobody's groaned about my thread title?

Jim,

I have read so many good tips on cpnhelp about best products, e-shop links, where to order abx...etc, that it would be very useful to collect them in one forum for other people also. I actually do not have any good tip, but do not you want to start with moving your link on charcoal? :)

We've groan accustomed to your puns!

Tip for taking the charcoal caps: take them with a mouthful of hot liquid, it'll force some of the air out of the caps and prevent some of the burping you might have otherwise.

I don't know what the non-flavored powder costs. It makes it palatable and mixes well. For a while it seemed useful when porphyria was a problem for me. If you have a high quality powder available more cheaply, I'd say go for that.

Ok, i've read about the charcoal but did not place alot of effort into understanding it, but now I will.  when should you take the charcoal? once a day, twice, etc, and how far from the antibiotics and probiotics? thank you

I have taken plain unflavored, unsweetened activated charcoal, 2.4 gm/teaspoon, for 3 years by just swirling it in water and either tossing it back or drinking it with a straw to get it past my teeth.  It also works to mix it with some applesauce.  Who needs to chew applesauce?   I have just purchased some 1/2 gram capsules from GNC to be more convinent for traveling.  It will take a lot of them - not too economical.

I also have pretty good luck with the glucose, but judging from the reactions I have been having from the Azith/Doxy combo I had better step up the anti porphyria routine.

Sarah. Did you have some cognitive impairment and pronounced fatigue at that time that improved on the chlorella?   I must say that Chlorella from a perspective of being more palatable is more apealing Image removed.

Hi Louise, when I started on doxycycline, which was the first thing I took, I had very pronounced cognitive impairment ad fatigue.  This started to improve within the month.  I started chlorella shortly after and it carried on but I can't say how much of that was due to chlorella.  The thing is also, I don't think I ever suffered greatly from porphyria and my liver has always been fine, so maybe the thing to do is just try it and see: it certainly is more appealing to take 12 little pills of sap green chlorella, tasting of the sea, than 12 capsules of constipating charcoal......Sarah    An Itinerary in Light and Shadow   Finished Stratton/Wheldon regime for aggressive secondary progressive MS in June 2007, after four years, three of which intermittent.   Still slowly improving with no exacerbation since starting. Porphoria is my bane, it is the fitting it in the amongst the meds and supplements that are needed to be absorbed that is the trick.

Then there is the Doxy that needs to be taken two hours prior to or after minerals, and then my several other items that I want to be sure are absorbed so want those alone each for 20 - 30 minutes and on an empty stomach, that I need to get up an hour or more earlier to fit in my entire treatment plan!

Thanks for your perspective.

Louise, it is a bit of a bind to fit everything in.   The charcoal is probably best taken in the middle of the night, if you like many others here wake up to go to the toilet.   When I tried charcoal I kept a dose and a glass of water by the bedside, so all I had to do is pick it up and swallow it.   In the end you may have to make compromises, for instance I ignore the 'take on an empty stomach' recommendation for Azi, I know it makes it slightly less effective but I can't fit everything in if I follow all the rules exactly.   I keep probiotics away from antibiotics, calcium and magnesium away from Doxy, and charcoal away from anything else...

Hi Michele, Middle of the night would be a good option however, after years and years of a mid-sleep cycle insomnia pattern I am currently since May 07 taking a minimal dose of Klonopin to encourage my mind to sleep a minimum of 6 - 7 hours in a row at night.

It has been a really good choice for me at this time. I do get to sleep OK with or without the medication, now and in the past, however once I wake, for any reason, going back to sleep in less the 2 - 3 hours has seldom occured.  My body remains fatigued but my mind does not quiet.

I was offered other drugs, tried herbal formulas and tried the melatonin option these, often helpful for other folks, did not do it for me.  Klonopin is a longer acting benzodiazapine so it peaks at the 3 - 4 hour after ingestion mark and that is just when I need it to maintain my sleep.  The doctor was really quite on about the effect when Rx this choice.   I take none in the daytime, have not needed to increase the dose, and occasionally forget to take it or take it with a full stomach and I wake in that usual way about 3 hours into the sleep cycle, which once in a while, is no big deal but over years the sleep deprivation accumulates.

I read here that porphoria often manifest sleep difficulties as one of its symptoms, if I remember that correctly.  Also I believe I read that benzodiazapines are somewhat anti porphoretic effect in the handbook somewhere.  I did not know any of this when I was diagnosed with CFS.

The sleep disturbance was one of the symptoms that had finally become intolerable, that and the cognitive difficulties and unrelenting fatigue and that I was ready to take alopathic medicine as a respite.  So fitting in the charcoal is major, as major as proper supplementation and effectively absorbed doxycycline.  Then there is the forcing of fluids necessary for hydration everything involving metabolism and filtration that  sees to be imporant for me in keeping everything literally moving.  So far no constipation with the charcoal.

Thanks for your suggestion, it is sure to be helpful to many others.
