Just interested....i would like to hear some experiences from anyone about Activated Charcoal for Porphyria. It works for me very well! How about you? I dont read too much about it here and just started taking it because it was recommended on the supplement's list.

This is my experience with my friend, charcoal. Image removed. Every night (with seldom an exception) I wake up feeling ill between 1-4 AM.  I have 5 capsules each 260 mg. of natural 100% pure activated charcoal at my bedside with a 16 oz glass of water. I take the charcoal, then use the bathroom and lay down again. I drink most of the water but on the way back to bed I stop at the refrig. for a refill. The next hour I take another few sips to keep the capsules down as it feels like they float up my throat. Not possible I know. Just feels like it. Then as the activated charcoal begin to absorb the toxins I begin to feel much relieve and fall asleep for the rest of the AM. I have not used charcoal during the day as my stomach is seldom left empty between supplement taking, meals and snacks. I am going to try using chlorella during the day ... just got a bottle yesterday. But that is another subject.  MM

2002:CFS. (2008-09:CPN - CAP/5 pulses)  3/2010: Restart CAP: 200Doxy/250Zith-MWF/Tini pulses. 6/2010: HighBP/Benicar, 7/2010: EBV, HHV6. 2012: 6,000 IU daily vit. D., Citioline CDP choline = sleep improvement dramatic.

hey, thanks a lot. I realized it helps me a lot too. I was wondering what other agents can be as effective for the porphyria besides and helping this. I mean a saw the list but i am interested more in experiences. Also how you can separete it from meds and supplements as we take so many. Specially worried about the abx. I keep them hours apart (sometimes 6-8 hours) but still was wondering if it can absorb some of them when the ABX start to do its job in the intestine system. At some point abx get there even if Activated Charcoal is already not in the stomach....

Viktor,

I take 12 caps of charcoal at once as it's listed on the chart to use 2-4 grams.  That would be about 3 grams of charcoal.  I suppose less might help but I do believe this dose helps some and I could prob use more.  I try to squeeze it in during the day away from meals, but like MM I keep a little container on my bedside containing 12 caps in it.  If I wake up at night, I take it.  If not, I don't.

I also take chlorella daily and just recently upped the dose from 1 gram to 1.5 grams 2/day and take it now before meals if I remember.  I was taking it with meals.

You can read more about chlorella in this thread along with what others say about the rx cholestyramine.

As for the other supplements, I take mostly all of them on the second link below.  I want the CAP to work for me and it seems the researchers, Drs and microbiologists have researched this stuff to give us what we need to succeed.

Recommended Supplements

You can find a chart which lists all the recommended supplements during a CAP's here.

thanks for this. besides the medication absorption thought, does it effect badly the natural flora in your intestine? I read something like that but i am not sure if i understood it well....

Viktor,

I'm not sure.  I don't seem to have an issue (at this point anyway) with gut flora although I do try to eat some natural plain yogurt each night before bed.

NAC 2.4g, Zith 250mg/MWF, mino 200mg, Tini 5day/1g/5 pulses, ValcyteSupplements, CFIDS/FMS, Hashimoto's, Psoriasis, PA, IBS, Sec Addisons Don't believe everything you think!

i take 8x260mg twice a day at the moment and also take 12 tabs of chlorrela - without them i get really bad porphyria - i dont think i could tollerate treatment without the use of charcoal and chlorrela. Every time i try and reduce my dose - porphyria raises its head again... hopefully in the next couple of months i should be able to reduce my dose and hope to just need it pulse week.

for the time being though charcoal is one of my best friends!! :P
