Acess to Forum Via Mobile Phone

My Paula is obviously bedbound and it is impossible for her to access this site using a computer.  There are probably potentially many thousands of people like this both CFS and MS and who have CPN and have the same problem.

Is there anway that a facility can be set up so people like her can look at the forums using mobile phones, for example using WAP?

I'm not very technical phone wise, but just a thought.

PS - saves me having to shout everything to her from the next room.

 Wink

Mark

My spelling is bad - should have been the header of "Access to Forum" etc

Hi Mark, I think you are in the right spot on the site.   My understanding is that the site is a labor of love by the site administrator.   I too had asked for changes early on and I think this is managed on a limited budget.  Maybe I am wrong.

I would ask you about your connection type and if you could run a long cord accross you appartment and maybe a friend who has a laptop could bring it by for a bit to see if the set up could possibly work for you.  Just a suggestion.  I recently got a laptop and last week when i was down with my Tini pulse I was able to run a long cable to the other side of my room and use the labtop in bed.   And yes laptops are costly new and I wonder about second hand electronics on your side of the oceanImage removed..  please  forgive if these suggestions are outragious.  I can see how tedious it would be to constantly read all of our replies in a shouting voice or waste rhems of paper printing them out!

It is a good sign that she is getting more curious, a very good sign of what is to come.

Say hi to Paula for me, are your yelling this right now!Image removed.

I don't know how your finances are, but you could get a decent second hand laptop and take the computer to her. Alternatively a mobile phone that can access the internet. Phoning is not going to give you the width of comments you get from writing questions so it has got to be a device that accesses the site as it stands.

If you ask at a mobile phone shop such as Carphonewarehouse I'm sure they will help you find the right phone and help you use it. But for the money you could get a laptop and not have to pay the call charges...

Mark.. Yes. you can get CPNhelp.org on a cellphone!  I did tech support for blackberry and windows mobile devices (my last job I had to quit Image removed.  due to becoming ill)  I also years ago did desktop support.

I have both (blackberry and win mobile device)  and can get the site on them :)  It's a bit harder to read as it is NOT html protocol but you definitely can maneuver through the site... The  windows mobile (operating system) displays better than the blackberry.

If you have a wireless router in your home she could connect to the internet through that otherwise you would have to pay a subscription fee to access the web via the device.

Hope this helps....

Ha! A chance to use my brain again and hope what comes out makes sense.

This site uses Drupal which is open source software (ie Free). Whilst it is pretty amazing for the sum of nothing, it wasn't developed to run on mobiles. It could probably be made to do so, or at least a very much cut down version of it could, but it would be a huge amount of work and whoever did it would need to know Drupal inside out.

The problem is that most mobiles use completely different protocols to display whatever they do, it's not a one size fits all, so any changes to the site have to cater for a myriad of browsers, fonts, font sizes etc.

I would agree with the people above and say get a laptop. Trying to type replies with a tiny mobile screen and complex keyboard is not something I would recommend either.

Andesine, I felt similarly to you  in regards to using my brain when I first located this site.  I had to look up words and spelling for things that were once second nature for me to be sure that I was using them correctly.  Then one day I noticed that I could think almost clearly.  Wow, not as remarkable as Daisey's husband but for me a huge WOW.  I no longer had to keep quiet because I realized that I often stopped mid sentence all to many times to locate simple words and concepts.  you have wasted not time starting on treatment, that is so wonderful for you.  I have to say your are making very good sense and you may be getting an email shortly from the site administrator I might suppose.  Hoping he sees your post.

Thanks Louise & Michelle.  I'll give our laptop a go in the near future again to see how things are.  Paula did have a problem with it before with relation to contrast etc.

Things have changed a bit since then so I'll have another look.

Cheers,

I was able to view CpnHelp (without the pictures)on my Palm if I was near by a WiFi connection. That's how I kept up with the site when I was away on vacation. Now I have an iPhone and I can get the full internet and see CpnHelp as it looks online. A laptop might be just the thing for her as it would be mentally stimulating without requiring dragging herself out of bed to use a desktop. My laptop was a real help when I was so sick and tired all I could do was drag myself to bed. I still had things to do for work but could do them while resting. It helps to have a WiFi connection or just get a long cable. Good luck, Raven CAP since 8-05 for Cpn and Mycoplasma P. for MS and/or CFS

You have an iPhone! Ooooh rich person! Image removed.

Yes Palms and iPhones usually have fully featured browsers but mobile phones churn out all sorts of odd things. It will probably show the site but I suspect it will be an extremely long page and difficult to navigate.

Try it at different times of day and with different sources of light.  At some point in time I do beleve that she will be able to tolerate the flat screen of the laptop.

I may have an iPhone (it was a gift from my husband) but I'm a teacher so I drive an old car that's been paid off for many years, pack my lunch every day and never go to Starbucks for lattes. I spend most of my expendable income on supplements it seems. Just another working girl who clawed her way to the vanishing middle class. But technology is very, very important to me. Look what we have found here at CpnHelp!! It's a real lifeline!! Raven CAP since 8-05 for Cpn and Mycoplasma P. for MS and/or CFS

hmmm, I have a laptop & a cord, if needed whereever I go!!  My husband is a tecky & he buys them on Ebay & puts some new stuff in them if needed.  They are actually becoming quite reasonable.

Ditto here Raven, I drive an banger (old, envioronmentaly unfriendly, but very economical, usually rusty car), I live in an unsophisticated house, (original 1920's kitchen and bathroom) I wear second hand clothes but I have two computers, some high powered graphic software, a mobile  (cell) phone, a palm pda, a top notch digital camera and all the peripherals that go with computers and digital photography.   I would be lost without them and my life and that of those I love would be very different without these things...

I also have iPhone envy. When my Palm gives out, I'll be able to justify it as I need an electronic scheduler and a cell phone, and the cost is about what both seperately are.... or maybe that tax rebate?

Anyway, lots of good suggestions. One other: if you have a wireless router for your laptop, your desktop can also be fitted with a wireless card which frees it from being pluged into ethernet or telephone wire. They are cheap, and a rolling table with adjustable tilt for the monitor and such, keyboard in the lap. I like Jeanne's suggestion about a windows mobile device, as you can find them on ebay for good prices.

But (and I'm a Mac user) iPhone is 'da bomb!

Norman you find the best sites on the internet. What a novel idea.  Still she would have to lie on the floor to use it, until they come out with a real over the bed model and the price would really go up then!

What Norman found, as it is a self build device could easily be altered by putting another bend in the plastic pipe so it had a more bed friendly angle.   Alternatively a bed table that tilts might be the answer  to a more comfortable use of the laptop.

You can use it on a bed; I did, when I was using mine. You just lay its feet on the bed. (At one point, I thought that bed rest would help my neck, so I built one of these. It turned out not to help much, so it resides in my attic.)
