Title

Acai, super food?

Body

As an Internet-savvy geek, I frequently surf around and see mention of Acai in various places.  Usually, it's mention of it's weight loss attributes but sometimes it's also the energy it supposedly gives, as well as how it is one of the best or the best anti-oxidant.  I have no idea what to believe.  What I'm wondering is are any of these claims legit and whether someone here has tried it?  In addition, I'm wondering if anyone would know whether or not it's safe to use while on the CAP?

Hi John, I used to buy the frozen pulp to make smoothies. I gave it up when I read up on black raspberries. Now that is the ultimate super fruit. Trader Joes sells them in the freezer case for much less than I was paying for Acai at the health food store. They are a very potent antioxidant and anti cancer agent. Perhaps the most potent.

Right now I blend a handful of black raspberries with a cup of organic apple juice, some strawberries, a handful of red chard and a bunch of cilantro. Add a little water and blend on high. Drink it down and the jolt of energy that ripples through the body is perceptible. (The cilantro chelates heavy metals, BTW.)

An interesting side note, the pigment of the black raspberry is so powerful that it was once used by meat inspectors to stamp sides of meat to mark the grade ( I remember seeing this when I was a kid)

as for the acai, I think it is a good food but that it is being heavily marketed. Same thing with Camu Camu. Tried that too. Acai and the others are safe to use--I would say even essential to keeping inflammation at bay. I just think that the black rasperries give the most bang for the buck.

Hi Raven

I used raspberries and black raspberries years ago as the very, very small quantity of carbohydrates I was eating while on a low carb diet.  I also used blueberries at the time.  However, none of those fruits have the reputation that Acai has.  I'm wondering why?  Is it all marketing, all gimmick?  Is it just a big farce that is being played on the general population?

There have been news stories.  There have been magazine articles.  There have been interviews with "experts" and interviews with people who claim to have "reaped" the benefits of it.  I find it all highly suspect but I can't argue that it doesn't sound incredibly interesting.  Is it all just crap?  I wouldn't be surprised but I would be disappointed if yet again, another lie was foisted on the population.

John, you and I must have similar thoughts on occasion, LOL .  I had been reading about Acai as well for quite some time and actually have a bottle that I ordered, yet unopened.  I am planning to add it, but I have so many of the basic supplements  I need to keep myself in line with.. right now... so maybe later :)

Here is an article you may find interesting, FWIW -- (I like this newsletter.....)  I believe there are many natural substances that we are just becoming aware of their healing/health properties.  IMHO, they can't be as harmful as popping some of the drugs the doc's are willing to prescribe for us, eh?

John, if you are going to use Acai, I would look for the frozen pulp and skip the dried capsules. I think most health food stores carry it. Makes a really great smoothie.

Jeannie, I get the Natural Newsletter and had not seen this article. I still think there is a lot of marketing hype over the Amazon "superfruits". And they are more expensive compared to frozen black raspberries from Trader Joe's.

Here's a link on the Mercola site.

Thanks Raven... I subscribe to Mercola as well, but haven't really been too impressed with him lately.. seems he is into marketing and selling his stuff...

I agree... there's a lot of hype about everything "natural", really.   I guess it all boils down to our personal tastes/intelligence, preferences (pocketbook, lol), and what works for us!

Having different input from everyone gives us options to try and choose.  I've been the blueberry route, but not the black raspberries.... :)

Raven, have you done any investigation regarding th Goji Berry (lycium barbarum) juice and dried berries as another option?  Louise

Louise, I tried the dried Goji berries that I can get at the healthfood store. Again, these are very expensive. I did'nt notice much of an effect. For the record, my all time favorite antioxidants in terms of cost, ORAC values and taste have to be black raspberries,POM pomegranate juice, broccoli sprouts and blueberries. BTW, last year I met a brain cancer survivor who ate blueberries every day after her surgery. Her balance returned and her mental acuity normalized. She attributed it to the blueberries. Something to think about to help clean up after toxins befuddle our brains.
